I passed my driving exam 2 days ago, and I've been searching used car websites for something I can use as a daily driver. I need to travel 14km to my university and 14km back (28-30km every weekday) which means I need something economical and reliable above all else. Keep in mind I'll be driving almost always on non-urban roads (90km/h speed limit), with occasional city driving.
I've been particularly interested in the Citroen Saxo lately, but there's thousands of choices out there that may be just as good.

What do you guys recommend for 1000 euro or under?

Here in the states, Japanese cars are the most common first cars for their price and reliability and Germans cars are basically the first cars from hell because they are too hard to work on and often unreliable.

that depends on the car, the MK2 Golf and Mercedes W201 were known to reach 300,000kms with no real problems :) Sadly, 99% of golfs are diesels where I live, and I need a petrol car as it's cheaper in the long run (generally cheaper maintenance, assuming the petrol car has less kms)

Too big and too thirsty, which is a shame because I love volvos ;)

Toyota trucks, small Fords (Focus, Fiesta, etc.), Hondas (Accord, Civic, Jazz), and 90's Toyota's (Camry, Corolla, Echo, Tercel, etc.)

Anything by VW wait that is everything there. anyways I think the 1993-2006 VW Golf should be a good pick upload_2017-9-30_15-2-39.jpeg I mean look at the thing there's no way you can have fun in that without wasting hundreds of Pounds in it, so insurance should be cheap, it's a European car so fuel economy should be cheap because your government can't just leave something without taxing the living fuck out of it, and parts are cheaper than me so being reliable don't matter.

The golf 4 would be a good choice but the insurance can be pricey because its so commonly used and all but its really reliable and so we had a skoda octavia wich is based on that and it held even with me driving it so that means quite something

Best car would be either an E36 316i, a 1.6 Golf MK2,MK3 or MK4 or if you live in the Netherlands, something like an Opel Astra

That would be because you live in Germany, I could ask you how many Skoda Felicias you see everyday and you'd have a hard time remembering when was the last time you even saw one, despite being the most popular cheap used car in Czech rep. and Slovakia.

As for the topic, I think there's not really much to go wrong if you pick anything within that price range. Is there anything more specific that you're looking for (size, options, etc.)?

Issa joke, but true, get someone with same interests. Ontopic: micras are pretty cheap and reliable but they also don't have much space.
