As far as I can tell Mitsubishi ran out of money, presumably they didn't sell enough mainstream cars and can no longer afford to make fun niche products. Subaru exists, however they are struggling a lot in the UK market, they do have the BRZ, however they had to team up with Toyota in order to make it. So I think the reason why they don't make those cars any more is because they made so much variety of them that they were spread to thin, meaning lots of competition in a space with few buyers. In other words they dedicated too many resources to a smaller audience. Hence they ran out of money. Mazda however did manage to survive, by selling cheap economy/family cars that are slightly fun (apparently).

The problem with making a car light is that in order to make it safe (and structurally sound) you need to use either expensive materials or allow the structure to take up more space, resulting in less cabin space. So in that regard there is a compromise to be made. Essentially you can only have two of the following three things: safe/lightweight/cheap. Of course with cleaver design you can work around these constraints to some degree, but there is only so much that can be done. As I love to bring up every now and again, the Citroen Cactus, a car that IMO doesn't get the credit it deserves is actually rather impressive. Since it is very lightweight (around 1000kg/2200lb), resulting in good fuel economy (same fuel economy as a prius, with no batteries or electric motors), but it also achieves a 4 star Euro Ncap rating, which while not quite on par with most other modern cars is still pretty good. On top of that it is fairly practical too. However its about as fun to drive as a prius because they don't offer a sportier model. I am also still waiting for a proper 4x4 version which undoubtedly will never ever exist... I would also love to see Citroen take this concept to a cheaper hatchback style vehicle. Where they don't need a huge engine to get a reasonably fun level of performance meaning lower insurance, fun handling and better fuel economy.
I think that the Citroen Cactus looks Really good too. Its has a very unique different styling. It suits it well imo.
Considering how good its fuel economy, price and 0-60 times (compared to some cheap cars) are, I am actually surprised that I don't see more of them (not sure if I have seen one before). I presume there must be something that is really offputting about it. Either that or no one even bothers to look at what Mitsubishi sells any more.
Maybe because car reviewers hate them but then a good amount of owners seem to like them (from what I have seen), I guess its like movie critics disliking a movie (Identity Thief) yet movie goers seemed to enjoy the same movie. This might be helpful to you.
