Right first of all: hello everyone; I just wanted to make a thread about the United Kingdom. More specifically what goes on and what we do and how we go about them. If you are not British and have a question about how we speak and our massive collection of words used only really here, what we do, what cars we drive (staying on the topic of cars after all how our number plates work or our why our fuel prices are so high is a good starting point) basically what I am saying is if you have a question about the UK you want answered then I or I'm sure another British person will be happy to answer them for you
To start off: (USA)=(UK) Freeway/Highway=Motorway Color=Colour Favorite=Favourite Sulfur=Sulphur Numberplates are... 12YY_XXX 12=Areacode YY=Year XXX=Random, gives car a unique identity For years we have two halves, like this: 14 would be 2014 1st half (1st March-End of August) 64 would also be 2014, but the 2nd half of the year (1st of September-End of February)
But only for registrations after a certain date. There were other formats too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_the_United_Kingdom
yep --- Post updated --- pre late 2001 there was a lettering system from A to Y excluding I,O,Q and Z for various reasons
pre late 2001 there was a lettering system from A to Y excluding I, O, Q and Z I think the UK economy is steadyish at the moment factoring in Brexit (Britain leving the EU NOT Europe as some people think) and we do like our hot hatches so think Ford Fiesta/Focus ST, Golf GTI basically because they are fast and decent on fuel because our petrol (gas) prices are about $5.50 per US gallon so we like our fuel economical cars and our roads are a lot smaller so although Ford does sell the Mustang, it isn't really suited to our twisty roads
Almost anything*. "Fuckyou" is not allowed and I believe "NOPLATE" (CA at least) is not allowed. I'm quite sure some cars in the UK have vanity plates.
Yes, its pretty common to see them but the common ones usually suck and are often hard to understand because the good ones usually cost £1000's. Ive saw a few cool ones like "BIG 1" on a dodge ram and "PS5T LAW" on some Audi coupe. Each registration plate has to be totally unique, isn't that the same in the US?
I think just for each state. For example: A car may have the plate ABC-123 in Utah, so no one else can have that plate in Utah. But someone else who lives in Oregon, New York, Hawaii, ect, can have the same plate as the guy in Utah. (I may be wrong though)
So as long as no one else in you're state has the same plate you can have anything you want (Within reason) that is such a col concept!
Also, cars have to have a number plate on the front, as well as the rear. Our police cars look like this: Our fire engines look like this: Our ambulances look like this: And our coastguards look like this: ...and like this:
the rain part is true , but recently it hasn't rained and we cant make our rain water cups of tea and u only get mugged if u go to London or anywhere near liverpool --- Post updated --- some plates for visual reference 1st , is from 1991 so that's a J reg 2nd is a 93( but car was a 92 hence K reg) 3rd is a 1974 so totally different placements of letters and stuff 4th is a 2003 but has a end of 2002 regplate so its confusing
I'm a professional Brit and I can give answers to all of your questions! 1. Q: Does it rain all of the time? A: Yes, we get around ten minutes of sunshine every year. 2. Q: Brexi- A: NOPE! 3. Q: What do your public transport vehicles look like? A: It varies by the region, you can search it up if you want because I cant be arsed to put images in here. 4. Q: Do you always drink tea? A: Some people do, personally I don't really like tea. 5. Q: Are people really posh or really nice to each other in Britain? A: No, its either chavs or immigrants, pick your poison. Ask me another question and I can answer it... Probably.
In the United States each state has different rules on where license plates must be. California you have to have a plate visibly on both the front and rear but in Arizona you don't need one on the front of your car.
Hawaii doesn’t require it I believe because I see a bunch of cars without front license plates all the time.
