Does removing the exhaust make cars more powerful in BeamNG?
If you are 10 and don't know what I'm talking about - Without the exhaust, the exhaust gases don't need to squeesed through a long pipe. Instead, they exit the engine immediately, thus making it easier for the engine to run, thus giving it more power (maybe a terrible explanation, just search ''How does and internal combustion engine work'' on YouTube)

The exhaust has no impact on torque curve.

..., the engine doesn't do anything to push the fumes through the pipe, that's all gravity and physics (yes, in real life as well)

Awww... It shouldn't be too hard to do, right? Hopefully they will add it to the race update

I'm 100% sure that removing the muffler gives the engine more power

I'm 100% sure that it just makes the engine louder, nothing else, it's all physics and gravity moving it through the pipe

Actually he is correct. An exhaust can indeed hinder an engines performance, no exhaust at all doesnt do it any good either but you'll find on high end engines a great deal of care is taken to design the exhaust system in a way to allow the highest volume of gas to pass without hindering the engine.

if by performance you mean sound, then sure, but otherwise, that is incorrect

Yes, it does make it a lot louder, but the last stroke, a piston does pushes out the exhaust fumes

IRL, there are things called performance exhausts. They make your Civic, at VTEC, sound like it is farting and pushing the little torque it can. But really, it can increase power a little bit, but it is more noticeable in more performance oriented cars. Like, if I have a turbo car, and I need about 2 psi more boost, then putting a better exhaust on can help me, only if I take more precautions, like if my pistons can handle it first. It makes little difference right now, because the devs haven't coded in a increase in power yet for the farting Covets.

i think youll find that gravity has a hard time pulling the smoke out of stacks. physics yes but gravity no.
as far as air management goes you have to think of a motor as a very inefficient pump air goes in gets compressed and then pushed out now the easier this happens the better but gravity has little or no affect on how the exhaust gasses leave its pure pressure or lack there of

I would go and get some lovely videos explaining it on youtube but sadly I would rather carry on playing through this music playlist and my connection barely copes with that so you get text instead.

Your gravity claim is totally wrong because funnily enough the gases have to flow upwards to begin their journey... Not to mention many vehicles having the exhaust exit mounted higher than the engine (motorcycles, trucks with stacks etc)

Your exhaust pipe can only allow a certain amount of gas to flow through. A longer pipe actually restricts this too (ever tried stacking drinking straws into a longer straw?). This causes a slight pressure build up, the engine while running now not only has to cope with the weight of the vehicle but has to overcome the back pressure too.

    Physics brah

Removing an exhaust system on basically any car will usually increase HP (but usually just a little bit thou unless it's a more powerful V8 or turbo charged). The HP increases because there is no longer a large amount (if any) of back pressure, thou torque may decrease because a little back pressure usually helps increases torque. However simply ripping the entire exhaust system from a car (at least usually with a more modern car) may cause the car to run very poorly and not burn fuel very efficiently because of the lack of a downstream air sensor and the fact that the car was designed/tuned to run with the back pressure that the exhaust system makes. It may take some tuning and backyard modding to get a car with no exhaust system to run right.

Also if they incorporated the HP change into the game that would be epic. :D

Nah guys, I think logoster is actually right. I mean, seeing as how exhaust isn't important at all, I don't know why they don't just plug it up completely so there aren't any harmful emissions.

Come on dude, surely you think air intake is important to an engine's performance? Doesn't it make sense that all the air being taken into the engine needs to leave the engine, and if it slows down leaving (through more restrictive pipes) , it slows down the air coming in?

If you have great intake (turbochargers, etc) but poor exhaust, it's defo gonna hurt your HP.

I don't know about the whole exhaust system but i know if you cut if off right in front of the muffler there is a noticeable power decrease and it sounds like crap, so i'm not sure how removing the whole system would increase power.

There's a reason that cars got better mileage and more power before the implementation of catalytic converters. Silly Logoster, argues wherever he can and gets nothing out of it because he's 95% wrong... Haha, c'mon man, quit arguing about things you don't know.

MAYBE (while very unlikely) on a new car with a chip managing the engine. But never on something from the 80s or 90s like most cars in BeamNG

Mopower should be a specialist to answer this, but is this why demolition derby cars have the exhaust pipes coming out of the hood? Or is that just so one less thing falls off during collision?

    +1

If you think the vehicles exhaust is not needed or that it does
    nothing you're plain wrong.

They tune exhaust systems for a reason and it's for performance
reasons and it's all based on back pressure.

    - - - Updated - - -

It's so they don't choke on the fumes when the exhaust falls off...

Fyi: Cars with no exhaust will fry valves...

I think they do it to make the exhaust shorter and to lead the extra heat away from the engine

No exhaust pipe is fine, you just need the headers.
