At the end of last month, while in Wellington, I had the opportunity to participate in an autocross event (Organised by Hutt Valley Motorsports Club) with two members of the Automation dev team. Camshaft Software co-owner Andrew Lamb let me drive his V6 Mazda Lantis race car - modified with custom exhaust, coilovers, a full roll cage, and wearing semi-slicks for this event.

To prepare for the event, we thought we'd do a bit of research. We located the street at which the event was going to happen, drove there and took precise measurements of the cone locations, which were marked with spray paint. We also measured the road widths, gutter heights and made estimates of the road camber and small elevation changes using photos. Then, back at the Automation office, we spent a couple hours carefully modeling this particular street to the measurements we took.

Once we had a very basic representation of the level in BeamNG.drive, all we had to do was place the cones at the measured markers, and the course was ready to practice! As for the car, well, it's been up on the repository for months now, and you can find it at https://www.beamng.com/resources/automation-lambtis.3796/

edit: Actually that version has too short gear ratios - the corrected one is here:

After 50 or so practice runs on the Fanatec sim rig, we had a pretty good idea of what to expect. And on the day of the event we both achieved times very close to the simulated car. Below you can see side-by-side footage of my second run and a simulated run of the course. As you might be able to tell, I lost quite a bit of time on the first right-hand turn due to entering too fast, resulting in scrubbing and understeer. In later runs (sadly not recorded - the GoPro battery couldn't quite last the day) I was able to improve my time to 1:06.3, almost identical to what I could achieve in the simulator.

In summary, we were found the combination of BeamNG and Automation to be an excellent training aid that produced remarkably close results to what we observed in reality.

You can find a link to the map below, although be warned: it's extremely basic :D

Thats awesome. I always had a thing for that particular Mantis, that V6 is remarkable in those older mazdas. Certainly one that I wish I could find in america and swap into my own car. great driving!

I just wrote something about autocross and getting to have fun day and here you have done exactly that, you devs are amazing, before I have a thought you know what I'm going to think :D

That certainly has been a fun day! :)

Thanks from the track and car, this will be fun to test out :p

That new version of the car is much better than old one, it even sounds better???

I did fail that 90 degree turn on 2nd lap, but got still 1:04 with this kind of hotlapping setup, but I don't need to be sorry for the car and can abuse it freely :p:
upload_2018-10-26_19-33-9.png Well, I kinda tapped a little that last cone, so it would be DQ I believe.

While that is super cool, I'm not sure how much useful information it gives about the simulation. Since the somewhat similar times show only that the acceleration, deceleration, and max cornering speed are roughly correct. While that may sound like a lot, it omits a lot of the things that make a simulation correct.

To be clear, I'm not poo-pooing on the simulation, its cool, I have over a 1000 hours in it, I'm just not sure that this side by side video shows very much.

If you had the means to record the throttle and steering inputs on the real car, and then feed that into BeamNG, I would be super impressed if the results came out even close to the same. I think that is where a mark of accuracy can be found.

Regardless, it is still a neat video, I enjoyed it :)

This is why we want better car sounds Mitch. That V6 sounds so good. I hope you guys can make V6 sounds as good as Mazda's for the game.

Does the car sound as good as RCR claims it does in the high rev range?

I have a question about this V6 sound of a new version of the car.

Is it possible to use that same way as ingame sounds is possible to use for mods?

I have a suspicion that they have also recorded sounds for V6 as they were racing. That's just a speculation though.

I won’t be surprised if they did. It’s the perfect moment to do so.

Well, I can confirm as the owner of the car that it felt pretty damn similar in BeamNG to the actual Autocross, and that most of the throttle/steering inputs were as similar as they could reasonably be expected to be (given the fact that it was an Automation replica of the Lantis, and so didn't have exactly identical suspension geometry/steering rack ratio/wheel alignment etc.)

It definitely seemed to be enough of an accurate simulation to have Mitch doing some pretty quick runs right out of the gate, with only minor driving style adjustments to the differences of the real car, and general gaining of confidence as the day went on.

Oh, I abuse it freely in real life too :p
