guys, it's supposed to be a generic engine. It takes cues from everything and every brand.

If there's gonna be a diesel engine does this mean they'll be adding engine pre-heat simulation for diesel vehicles?! :D

That's probably why they're not coming in the next update - gotta get the thermals right.

Let's not forget thermals for aircooled engines - I've got a funny feeling they're part of what's holding up the Autobello.

    -edit-

Whoops. I thought this was the Update Speculation thread.

I'm not so sure if they really need to add it. After all, we've got several diesel vehicles already - the Pigeon, the T-series, and all three of the ETKs.

Alright, hold the phone here. We got to this point in the discussion by speculating that the reason the Gavril diesel isn't scheduled for the next update was that diesel engines would require new thermals. This is not the case, as there are other diesel engines existing in the game at this time.

We could have saved ourselves some time and embarrassment by reading the original post (emphasis mine):

Well if we already have the physics, then isn't the audio the only issue?

I now wonder if the BeamNG team will share the audio files with Automation, since they also lack diesel engines... & they use FMOD for sound too

To all of you concerned with the fuel system, hear ye:

I replicated the Gavril V8, which is most likely a pushrod engine with throttle-body injection, in Automation. I used a compression ratio of 9.3:1, which is pretty standard for the time (that's what the L05 had). As I do not believe Automation simulates knocking accurately or realistically (engine designs that run on regular in the real world will occasionally not even run on leaded 97-octane in Automation), I used 93-octane fuel. I then tuned the cams and ignition timing for maximum efficiency. In total, four variants were made: a 4.5- and 5.5-liter V8, each one having either dual exhaust (as in the Grand Marshal) or wide single exhaust (as in the trucks and vans). The resulting performance figures were nearly identical to the ones in BeamNG: 213 HP from the 4.5, and 233 HP (and boatloads more low-end torque) from the 5.5.

So, the Gavril V8 is probably plenty realistic, at least in terms of performance, even if it does use TBFI.

(If it is OHC, then the 4.5 is pretty much spot-on, but the 5.5 is bigly underpowered. In that case, it should be more like 250 HP and 305 lbs-ft, which would do wonders for towing.)

    Okay guys, unpopular opinion incoming.

This engine is too modern for the D-Series, H-series, and I'd argue the Roamer, too. I can understand the Grand Marshal, as the Crown Vic would be its most closely related IRL counterpart (in my mind, anyway) but the bigger utility vehicles really need something more akin to a Ford Windsor or Small-Block Chevy. The D-15 in particular is from a time period where a 302 Ford or 305 Chevy were mid-tier engines, and the 351 Ford and 350 Chevy were the top dog in 1/2 ton trucks, vans, and truck based SUVs. An OHC Ford engine didn't appear until 1991 (aligning with the Grand Marshal) in small displacement form (4.6L), and not until 1997 in large displacement form (5.4L) and only then was it found in the 1/2 ton trucks, vans, and SUVs. It wasn't until 1999 that SOHC Ford engines made their way into 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks, vans, and SUVs.

TL;DR mah immersion is compromised by the SOHC engine model where an OHV model should be

seems strange to me that everyone is so quick to say "hirochi is subaru" and "the covet is obviously a civic" and stuff like that, but so so many people are reluctant to directly compare the grand marshall to the crown victoria.

also, yeah, in my mind why would a big old truck v8 from the 70s and 80s be anything but pushrod???

Isn't it a mix of the Crown Victoria with a Chevy Caprice?

the grand marshall most closely resembles a full size buick, since everyone seems to overlook that obvious inspiration for its styling lol

No no no no no NO!!! It is obviously OHV. Where are the cams? There's not enough room under those rocker covers. Plus, what is that big pulley in the center of the engine, right where you would expect a pushrod camshaft to be? This engine's closest analogues are the LO3 and LO5, both of which could be found in the late-model B-bodies. Miss me with that Modular shit.

Not to mention that the power numbers are almost exactly what you would get from Automation with a pushrod, TBFI setup of either 4.5 or 5.5 liters. The power increase from MPFI, at least in Automation, is actually not all that great - we're talking around 15 HP and a moderate gain in efficiency. Maybe re-engineering the entire engine with MPFI just wasn't worth the money for Gavril at the time?

Or, as other American manufacturers, they were back at the technology and were not familiar with modern things.

Pretty damn obvious, innit? That pully you were taking about is the freaking water pump.
