So before you tell me "BeamNG only supports Windows," yes, I know, but has anyone been able to get BeamNG running on Linux with decent performance? I'm just wondering because I'm building a new PC and I thought I'd give Linux a try. I'm also trying to stay budget friendly and the extra $100 for a copy of windows is not budget friendly. Long story short, can I run BeamNG on Linux and if I can, can I expect decent performance compared to running it on Windows?
you can still get windows 10 pro for me afaik i forgot how though lmao, just thought i'd let you know
I assume you meant "for free" and yeah, I could just download Windows and run it on my new system without a license. It can be kind of annoying doing that though because Windows will usually bug you constantly about not having a genuine copy of windows. But I'm not just building this pc to be budget friendly. The whole reason is to game on Linux. Anyway, this thread isn't about how I don't want to buy Windows it's about whether or not BeamNG will work on Linux.
When BeamNG updates to allow you to run Linux, then hell yeah why not. Otherwise I don't think there's a way to run the game on Linux
AFAIK, you're able to run BeamNG on Linux using Lutris with minor problems (that may or may not occour). A friend of mine has tried it & ran the game without a problem & said the performance was okay (which I assume was around 60fps) even though he has a PC from ~5 years ago which wasn't top of the line back then either
Glad to hear that it will run on Linux (with or without minor problems). Thanks, that's basically all I wanted to know. I'll be building my Linux system soon so i'll be able to test it for myself but I figured I might as well ask to find out if anyone else has tried and succeeded with running Beamng on Linux
Slight bump to this, but it is informative. BeamNG does now actually work on Linux using Steam Play with the Proton 3.16-5 Beta version.
I literally pressed play & it started working to my surprise But there was screen tearing which I couldn't get rid of
It definitely didn't work under 3.16-4 - but it does work under 3.16-5. No noticeable performance differences between proton 3.16-5 and the latest generic builds of wine/dxvk.
After the release of Wine 5 (it will probably be the same on version 4, the main thing is to install the correct libraries through winetricks for DirectX Vulkan) finally you can normally play BeamNG on Linux !! The video card now works at almost the same performance as Windows. That is, if you delete all the vehicles on the map, the FPS will be the same as on Windows. Now everything depends on the processor. The more beams used, the less FPS. I have an AMD FX 6300, with the Gavril D15 50-60 fps. If you add parts, then the FPS decreases, if you remove some parts (hood, bumpers, glass), the game becomes completely playable. But this is on the FX 6300, I think it will be better on other processors. And most importantly, why you should play on Linux is the sound quality. The game is now perceived in a new way ..
Well, so long ago it was. Now the game is better optimized than 2 years ago, it is quite playable on Linux. On my stock GTX 780 at maximum settings (except for dynamic reflection and smoothing) from 30 to 60 FPS
Well, justified bump or not, this is new information to me and it's pretty damn cool. Gonna try this.
The main thing is to install the correct wine libraries. In the stock version, Wine Beamng will start and work, but the performance will be very low .. you need to install these libraries for the vulkan API (enter into the console) $ winetricks d3dx10 d3dx11_42 d3dx11_43 d3dxof $ winetricks d3dcompiler_43 d3drm d3dx9 $ winetricks dirac msvcirt wininet quartz riched20 riched30 devenum dinput8 dinput $ winetricks directmusic directplay dsound msxml4 msxml6 $ winetricks vb3run vb4run vb5run mdac28 $ winetricks mfc40 mfc42 $ winetricks vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 $ winetricks secur32 flash atmlib $ winetricks ie8
Update: All Proton/Steam Linux Run time versions immediately crash on start except Proton 3.16-9, which gets to that start menu and crashes. The reason for the crash seems to be unsupported DirectX. I'm running an RX 480 8gb, but I am almost certain it is not the root cause.
I can run windows software on linux with just a virtualbox. I got beamng to open but it was slow because I was using a c2d computer.
The graphics card driver must be proprietary, not standard. The game should start and run on stock Wine. In the program settings you need to specify Windows 7 or 10, but not XP. For best performance, you need to download and replace libraries for 3D rendering. With them, graphics performance is not worse than on Windows. But the FPS will sag depending on the more cars on the map. The physical engine of the game on Linux poor performance. But now I don’t use Linux - in the latest updates (I have 1909, begin version 1809 sound better) the sound in Windows 10 has become much better, and maybe better than in Linux! On Windows 7, 8, 10 2015, the sound is bad.
You don't say The main reason for using Linux, is that it's secure & uses less resources than Windows. Other than that, if you want to strictly just game, I'd stay with Windows for a bit longer
