I've made this post as I am concerned for the game's future modding community, right now I feel there are far too many people who are on these forums making what others deem low quality / low effort "mods" while trying to pass them off as high quality products, while sometimes also lying about model authorship*1.

Or people blindly defending those who create things worthy of being classified as above ^

*1 usually not the case, but still common enough to warrant a minor rant about

For example, if I were to take a Forza mesh, make a filler chassis for the underneath, put some sunburst and etk bits in it, use the Sunburst nodes and beams, but repositioned, would you call that a meshslap?

I would, yes. As it's textbook "beep boop, take mesh and put it on existing jbeam, but move the nodes so you can say *it has jbeam wtf broski y u call it shit you rude person*.

this was a zero effort meshslap posted in late 2017.

Again, I know this is easy low effort modding as I have done it myself in the past and now, but never gave it anyone outside of my discord server (That AE101 Corolla which was just an 89 Pessima, and early releases of the Satsuma, which was / is just a shorter Covet with Sunburst and autobello suspension)

For those defending mods like this, why? What do you get from "borrowed" models, textures and abysmal jbeam structure?

Sure they can LOOK nice, but what is the point in using a game designed for advanced softbody physics for taking screenshots?

If that's why, what's stopping you from using Forza, Assetto Corsa or literally any other modern racing game with those same cars? As 90% of them are more graphically advanced than BeamNG.

    upload_2019-2-16_14-52-11.png

words are sometimes put inbetween quotes like "this" when I deem something low effort, or otherwise low quality.

I'm not writing this to try and stir drama, I am asking users a pretty serious set of questions.

If a user decides to start anything here, then it's their fault own for not taking the time to actually read this and instead gloss over it and act professionally offended for no reason whatsoever.

Feel free to correct me on anything in this post, as I didn't really proof read this at all and is all over the place because of that :)

More so on this, the ego of said meshslappers is usually very inflated, they won't take critique and then people argue "but the mod handles well".... of course the mod is almost always going to handle and have good engine performance its taken from the developers of the game. It's like if I put a donkey mesh on a covet jbeam, its not going to change how the jbeam performs is it? It literally is a visual change.

The elitism, the short cutting and the general laziness needs to go.

So is it a meshslap if it's taken from another game without permission or is it that it's slapped onto an existing jbeam? Because there's plenty of good mods that use pre-existing jbeams.

I mean meshslap in my humble opinion is the technique not the quality.

A meshslap is a mesh slap up until a point.
Of course a car with a literal Covet jbeam is a mesh slap, but a car with maybe under 60% reworked Covet parts isn't.
As corvette81 said, the meshslappers that make these "mods" usually have very inflated egos, and are extremely sensitive to criticism like a certain meshslapper on a certain group.
This forum has gone from a good mod every few months to shitty 20 minute Automation vehicles and meshslaps every hour.

And, my guess is that why are meshslappers so sensitive to criticism is because they live on the big fame they have.
The big fame they have thanks to the kids that come for a supercar that has a Bolide jbeam on it. And that makes them popular, and they live on that popularity, that much, if someone "dares to insult the perfect modder", they become so whiny to the point that they start attacking the person until the point that it almost becomes serious harassment.

I have nothing against taking car meshes from other games & then making the jbeam from ground-up for them (like that one Mustang from Project Cars), but just slapping a mesh onto an existing jbeam & calling it quits shouldn't be praised AT ALL but rather frowned up heavily

And also. They think that modding is life. And they're so worried about making the perfect mod.

Modding is not life. And they should be worried about things that are most important than making the "perfect" meshslap.

your post is completely wrong. Meshslappers doesn't have fame when their mods are being hated. And if some kids want to defend meshslapper, it's not their fault.

Technically, it is their fault for defending a meshslapper. They deliberately go and defend these kind of people, as if they're as good as a experienced modder.

In my opinion, part of the issue is that some people simply aren't open to criticism.
for example, a person might start out by porting some model from forza/nfs/etc., putting it on an existing Jbeam, and tweaking the shape to fit it, and modifying mainengine characteristics, a bit (or maybe use some from an automation engine). being that it's not of utmost quality, some modders in this situation will look at the quality of their mod compared to the likes of NinetyNine's, or Stoat Muldoon's, and see that the mod is not up to scratch with theirs.
then, when they release it, some will write the description in a way that honestly shows its quality. and when someone comments "The Jbeam is really bad, and the model is too high poly" they will accept most of the advice people give them, and try to fix them.
one of "those people", however, will release the mod believing it's the greatest thing to ever exist on this pitiful forum, and get mad whenever anyone writes something along the lines of the above comment.
that attitude results in the viewer looking at the modder, and therefore their mod, negatively, in contrast to simply considering them a newbie with a w.i.p. mod with things to still learn.
(perhaps the edginess and bad reaction to criticism may be the result of trying to use the identity of being "a good modder" to socially validate themselves, but maybe not, I'm no psychologist.)

Generally, the more deviation from the model on the part of a JBeam structure, the lousier the mod. I have very little sympathy for anyone who gets mad when somebody points out that a Covet Jbeam is unsuitable for the 5-door hot hatch they got off of a free model site.

On the other hand, I have very little patience for anybody who expends considerable time, effort, and profanity into mocking meshslappers. I have even less patience for somebody who accuses any mod that has JBeam issues of being a meshslap.

I kind of wonder how a Crown Vic mesh slapped to the Grand Marshal JBeam would fare, but that's a largely academic point.

I know of at least 3 old chevy mods where the authors said they did not have to modify the D Series jbeam almost at all to fit properly.

YellowRusty: always the voice of reason and wisdom on the forums.

His comment basically entirely sums up how I feel about the issue... Lousy meshslaps are bad, however devoting a large amount of time into mocking 'meshslappers' is no better.

In my own words... Don't like it? Don't download it.

Not everyone wants to spend more than 3/4 of a year simply modeling and Jbeaming and adding sounds and bugfixing. And everyone wants atleast one car they love in a game to play with. Not everyone has time on their hands to work on a car that might just be broken in the next update. There will always be amazing mods; people that want to push the game to the limits. Because that’s how humans work.

Why can’t people just let bygones be bygones? You’re getting something to play with atleast. I’d rather have a mod rather than no mod.

Sure it’s a crash simulator, but the graphics can still serve some beautiful screenshots. Hell, I rarely crash cars. My favorite thing to do is to derp around with the AI, because I don’t know what else to do with crashing. There’s a slight limit to ideas that include wrecking a car, but screenshots and AI feel like limitless potential. Though that may just be me.

I would much rather take a screenshot of a cool vehicle in BeamNG than in Forza Horizon, because the maps can be so varied. You won’t get anything like Utah, West Coast, and JRI in any horizon game.

If you don’t like a mod, so what? As long as it took longer than a week to finish, I’m fine with it, because it’s their mod. In a way, we wouldn’t have such good mods if there wasn’t a starting point.

Just tell me if none of this made sense, my way with words suck...
