What makes them think your hard drive is bad? If it's from 2014 it's totally within the drives working lifespan. So unless there is something actually wrong with it, such as damage or reporting bad s.m.a.r.t values, I don't think there is any reason to replace it. Of course hard drives off any age can fail, so it's always good practice to keep a backup of important data. Hard drives are pretty cheap, so if it is on its way out, its not worth replacing the computer over. If you want more performance, you may be able to upgrade the GPu without causing a bottleneck, depending on what I5 and GPU you have.
It is indeed worth asking why he thinks your hard drive should be bad, on that topic if it is a SSD and not a HDD it is possible that it is indeed to old (my logical solution). A SSD has a limited lifespan because it can be overwritten a finite amount of times before it fail, therefore a 2014 SSD is indeed old, if it is a HDD the is no direct limited lifespan but it could be possible that the disc made a unhealthy noise while operating, which could have been noticed. If you never had corrupted file issues or anything else suggesting a drive failure I would just calmly ask your friend what made him suggest the 'should already be long gone' statement. Further regarding your PC, a new PC for a hard drive is completely unnecessary seen as you can always just exchange drives between PC`s (can ask your friend again). If your PC still works and does what you want it to do keep it, if you desperately want a upgrade get a new one. You only said your PC is old (2014), not that it had problems or was too slow, I`d advice to just keep your PC for now, potentially get a new HDD or SSD and not to worry about it.
AFAIK with most (decent brand) ssd's, it would take a truly astonishing amount of data to be written to them before they reach the point of going bad. Samsung states that their high end drives are designed to take 150tb of writes, and will withstand 600tb of writes. 150tb of writes would be the same as writing 40gb every day for 10 years.
Hi, computer repair experience here. Unless you hear some clicking or are noticing prolonged boot times or random data corruption, your drive is fine no matter the age. I have mid-late 90's Connor hard drives (which are notorious for failure) that work 100% fine. Of course, like with a car, age comes with increased odds of failure, but a drive will let you know way ahead of time if it's looking to die.
So the samsung galaxy s10 has launched, and tbh i'm thinking one thing, how the hell are samsung going to sell a Note 10 alongside this S10... think of the S10 5G.. it'll just be that with a pen, is there going to be any other defining feature? If there is then that will be impressive.. but imo i'll wait a couple of years when they aren't silly prices the note 10 actually meets every single last one of my needs as a smartphone, pen support, good video record and OIS..
5G will be very fast of course, but currently virtually nowhere has support for 5G, even when the S10 5G was launched, as 5G adoption will take some time (thanks to some mess), and some countries even have issues with 4G support, let alone 5G. I'd wait for the second generation. First generation 3g and 4g devices quite often had poor battery life, same may be true with 5g. I'm kinda interested to what the HDR video recording is like, since it could look pretty damn amazing if done well. They also say that their image stabilisation is now on par with action camera's, which considering GoPro's latest video stabilisation tech, could be a really big deal. Especially when compared to the abomination which is optical image stabilisation on my OP3. Which can't be turned off and makes video look less stable and jittery than my Galaxy S2, which had no stabilisation. But I am kinda in the same boat as you, I'm interested, but only once the GS11 is a thing. Since I don't need to upgrade yet, and its way better bang for buck. Shame about the android updates though.
They make the nicest Android devices imo. OnePlus etc is fine and all, but it's really not the same in so many ways, they cut a lot of corners. Equally, Samsung devices tend to go for the same sorts of prices as OnePlus devices after a while. Having owned both, I would probably take a last gen Samsung over a OnePlus. The camera's are just better. Not to mention that they still offer a headphone jack. Which I am wholeheartedly in favour of.
Actually, SSD lifespan even nearly a decade ago exceeded the mechanical lifespan of an HDD, provided proper wear leveling was used, which was an issue on earlier drives, solved about 5 years ago. Lol no. They've been seeking asynchronous and concurrent systems way ahead of consumers. Regularly achieving so. Multithreading is one of the core principles behind achieving hard real time guarantees and has been used for literally decades. And no. You are only demonstrating programmed behaviours of Windows (Windows will drop clock speeds when idling) and issues with power. I didn't use the headphone jack even when I had one. Nor am I a camera snob. A phone should be a jack of all trades and not really excel at anything. Let it capture the moment, sure, but why are people wanting to shoot movies on one? I don't get the phone worship at all. I have an iPhone. It's a phone. It does phone things. People say I bought the wrong phone. I don't know why, I don't care why. They all do the same phone things.
Some people do like taking photo's, or listening to music (without paying the wireless tax [or an obsolete product after the standards are changed]), so to answer your question, yes, many people do still care. Its like questioning why a mechanic would need an air compressor for inflating tyres, when a hand pump would "do the same thing". Sure, a hand air pump is all that many people actually need, but there are also many people to whom something a bit more advanced is useful.
But there are better devices for the job. Even given someone really good at taking phone pictures a proper piece of equipment? It's hilarious! I can't take a picture worth a fuck on my phone camera, but I'm pretty damn good with a DSLR. And I wasn't asking why people care about phones in general, I'm just wondering why people still care every time a new Samsung device comes out. TouchWiz is horrible, Bixby is terrible, the Exynos phones are slow, and battery life isn't all that great because (for some reason) phone manufactures are trying to cram 1440p and 4K screens into a 6" device. It's a big dick waving contest. I gave up an iPhone 7 Plus for a XS Max. I could go 4 days with my 7 Plus with sporadic use, maybe a day of heavy use mixed in. I can barely get 2 with my XS Max. I genuinely wonder how much of that is due to my 7 Plus just having a lower resolution.
There's better devices but some people also don't want to carry 3 or more devices. I am putting the waters with a potential project of an open source iPod of sorts. And sure. Some people want that. But many are content for the device in their pocket. Can squeeze 3 days out of my phone. 1440p120 panel too. But then I do need an adapter to use headphones
wait you don't like the OIS fair enough, my ZF3 (zenfone 3) had ois but used eis ontop of it also which removed the ois artifacts somewhat.. but you could also switch off the EIS and go straight OIS (like on 1080p60 mode) and it looked alright, but you could turn off OIS in the menu as well.. i miss that phone quite a bit tbh, but damn we have come far in camera sensors, the dynamic range is awful on my ZF3 and i remember thinking it was amazing compared to my iPhone 5S.. I want the HDR 4K record too, main reason for upgrading, also the 4K120 of the exynos will be interesting, imagine 8K recording (sensor might not support it tho).. we will see.. hmm no 40mp camera? Samsung might be holding it back for an 8K 40mp all singing all dancing launch with the Note 9.. but somehow they would have to just use Exynos chips, which wouldn't really work with the CDMA patents.. Qualcomm need to up their video encode/decode game..
OIS is great when done properly, but OnePlus totally f'ed it up, and since it can't be disabled theres nothing that can be done to sort it out. Here is a video I did a few years back showing why its bad on the OP3: When not in slow-mo, each of those OIS resets makes the footage super unstable.
