I have had a virus that was sort of my own creation. A school project one, made in Python. What it did, was searched for .exe files on all drives, and ran them all. Then, it went through all the image extensions, and opened them all, bluescreening me. It also constantly changed the position of the window, so it couldn't be closed. (I accidentally clicked on it while looking through old files)

PC: none, but virus scanner detected and deleted some threats in the past.
MacBook: none, no virus scanner needed. Only school related things and some Steam games.
Surface Pro 3: none, and Windows Defender has never detected a threat. Defender is perfect for basic protection.

Avast acts like a virus. Pop-up ads and all. It manages to assert itself at the most annoying times.
