Hello I am looking to upgrade the hardware in my 7 year old laptop workstation. It currently runs beamng fine with about 15-20fps (depending on which map and also I have it limited otherwise I just get lag spikes) with everything on low except textures. My current specs are HP elitebook 8560w 2nd gen quad core i7 2760k nvidia quadro 2000m 32gb ddr3 ram 1tb of sshd storage windows 7 pro 64bit I am looking to upgrade my gpu from a quadro 2000m to a gtx 965m since thats the only thing my computer can handle heat wise. How good of an upgrade is it from a quadro since the main reason I am upgrading is for 3d modeling and not for this game but it would also be nicer to have more fps.
That's actually impossible. No way you have a desktop cpu in a laptop. I think you meant the i7-2760QM, which is a different product, only for laptops. For a GPU upgrade you have to see if it's ball mounted (most likely). If it's like this you have some options: completely mod the motherboard to suite the new gpu; I don't recommend this since you WILL encounter problems and you may end up with a fried motherboard buy a new motherboard that can suite that CPU and has the desired GPU; I think it'll be impossible because the cpu is from 2011 and the gpu you want is from 2015, so it'll be soldered to a newer motherboard that supports newer cpus and not you 2nd gen cpu; buy an external GPU dock with a desktop GPU; there are many videos on how to set it up correctly;
Thanks for your reply. about the cpu your right it is a 2760qm I sorta guessed from the last time I checked on what my specs were. I was also thinking about the external gpu but I couldn't figure out how to connect it to a laptop from 2011. The most common one is through the mini PCIe slot but that's taken up by my wireless card I think. I have no thunderbolt ports but I do have an express card slot I was thinking about but I didn't know if that would throttle my gpu. I also have a docking station (for hooking up to monitors and other things) and that might have a mini PCIe slot the model on the docking station is hstnn-i11x if that wont throttle my gpu. and than last question is what is a good gpu that is relatively cheap like $100-300 that will still be a major upgrade from the one I currently have. I saw a guy on YouTube running an external GTX 960 via the WLAN pcie express if I remember correctly; you may have some bottlenecks since the internal mini pci-e isn't a full 16x pci-e slot (while the gpu uses 16x pci-e). I don't know about the docking station because there aren't many modern laptops that use it anymore. I suppose it uses a pci-e lane, but it will be a proprietary thing that I would not modifiy. Everything is an upgrade from that GPU... Even a GTX 580 is far better than the Quadro 2000M, you can buy everything that suites you budget; in that range (100-300$) you can choose an used card or a new one. In the used market you can have pretty much everything In the new market you can even buy the newest GTX 1660Ti By the way I suggest not opting for the top of the line GPU since you may end up bottlenecking it with your cpu. A good GPU may be a GTX 960, GTX 1050Ti, GTX 1060 or going back in history, a GTX 780/770.
Thanks for your help. I now have two options get a new laptop that has a decent processor (but I will really miss my trackpad since it has 3 buttons on both the top and bottom it also has a numpad which is very necessary) or get a gtx 1060 egpu via expressscard.
lol just got this as I was modeling and I wasn't even rendering or using my gpu since all my tasks were using my cpu. Desktops dont have a trackpad oh and also I dont have room for a desktop.
why don't you just buy a new gaming laptop, you can pick up one with a GTX 1050 for under 600 nowadays
You can buy trackpads for desktops. Express card and minipcie aren't compatible with modern GPUs. Nvidia and AMD both require PCIe x4 (ideally version 3.0) to function as GPUs (they can only act as dumb display drivers and run compute tasks on less). Your laptop's expresscard and miniPCIe are both PCIe 2.0 X1, 1/16th the speed required --- Post updated --- You simply need a new machine full stop. That one is not upgradeable
