I have a USB3 WiFi adapter that works really well... until it gets hot (my peak internet download speed is almost 60 megabytes per second) and then performance tanks. Anyone have an idea of how I could cool this thing?

Yeah, the back panel of the USB stick is removable. I could probably replace that back panel with those.
Most electronics seem to live better without pants, so I would think that removing plastic is way to go, of course it removes warranty, but can't count how many things I have made to outlive their warranty by removing unneeded decorational plastic covers, easily tripling life of the device.
Or if you want even more cooling you can buy a small fan (50mm or so) and mount it on the heat spreaders linked above. Then you can de-solder the 2/3 pins of the fan and solder a usb so you can power it from another usb port. Just be sure to buy a 5V fan or it will not work very well...
