What cars are the motoring equivalent of what certain musicians or bands are in the world of music?

    I'll start off:

    - AC/DC is the Mazda MX-5 of music. Commercially successful for its sort, popular among beginners and often seen as something low-level. Had a string of what the fans may not necessarily call their best material, but then managed to rebound.

    - The Rolling Stones are the BMW 3-Series. Both have a variety of options for different listeners/drivers, have spent quite a lot of time on the more purist side, whether soft or hard, and aren't going anywhere despite their age.

    - Humble Pie are performance RWD fullsize Holdens (e.g. HSV versions of the Commodore). Loved by the fans and achieved quite the level of competence, but ultimately gone due to external factors.

Ice Nine Kills would be the Ford Mustang SVT Cobras of music. Hints of oldschool material (from books to slasher movies) from their songs, rebounded as metalcore songs. Some songs are somber (representing the exterior), while others are more aggressive (representing the engine that powers the SVT Cobra).

The Foo Fighters are the SN95 Mustangs of music. They proved that, even as the market was shifting away from it, their style was in high demand, and, with time, became absolute icons of their respective fields. They also were a bit anachronistic, taking what was good from the old times, and adapting it to the 90s. They’re both very American, and are somewhat brutal in some regards.

I also happen to enjoy both.

I would consider Mark Knopfler to be the Jaguar E-Type of music, mostly because of it's beauty and design, originality, fuckin' etc.
The guitar playing from Knopfler would be the E-Type's prettiness and originality. Which is also one of the most well-valued stuff from the E-Type, and especially, how does the guitar sound like. Man, both are pretty, very pretty sounds that get stuck in your head way easily. Due to it's beauty, just like the finest quality wine, but this time, being a car, obviously.

Death Grips is the Vector W8 of music, not well known but absolutely brutal and incredibly skilled in what they do.

Keith Moon's solo career (or simply his lone album Two Sides of the Moon) is the Triumph Stag of music.

You would have expected a lot more competence from a known name like this. However, a mix of having the wrong focus (singing Beach Boys-style pop/Rover-esque design) and really big, somewhat foreseeable, trouble during development (Keith's drinking and partying/Triumph V8) made for something that wasn't what one could expect.

There was going to be a follow-up (Moon's 2nd album/Project Lynx), but other trouble (Keith's death/BL bankruptcy) prevented it.

"The Neon was the first cheap car to have active aero, the body panels were so weak they'd flex from drag."
"The Neon's engine didn't generate enough power to move the car, the radiator fan pushed it along."

Truth is, it was quite competitive on international markets.

Cheap car = low quality. Get it, Americans.

The Beatles are (fittingly) the Volkswagen Beetle. Incredibly popular worldwide, a symbol of the '60s, ended around the turn of the millennium, and popular with hippies.

Cream would be like, the Dodge Challenger, or any other 60's muscle car.
Good stuff, with it's own great personality, amazing sound, etc, etc.

Funnily enough, the Challenger was only a 70s car.

I'd say the Cream muscle car is the 1st gen Pontiac Firebird - great, but underrated and better known for later career of its Trans Am offshoot, just like Eric Clapton is known much better than his Cream bandmates.

The Who are the musical equivalent of the Ford Thunderbird. Started out as wild and youthful, then started putting on airs and became more commercial, but great at what they did, later became more experimental with varying results, and ultimately ended up making a kinda strange attempt at a comeback.

    My Generation - 1st gen
    A Quick One - 2nd gen
The Who Sell Out - 3rd/4th gen
    Tommy/Who's Next - 5th gen
    Quadrophenia - 6th gen
The Who By Numbers - not a Thunderbird, but a Lincoln Continental Mark V
Who Are You - 7th gen
    Face Dances - 9th gen
    It's Hard - 10th gen
    Endless Wire - 11th gen

Ah yes. My bad, but I agree with the rest you said about the Cream band.
