I think he's confusing it for the Mondeo's American cousin, the Fusion (which they're going to kill off this year). Either that or he thought that what was happening in Ford US would apply to Ford Europe. Either way that statement is actually incorrect (hell, Ford even denied rumors that the Mondeo will be killed off).
So then the Grand Tour spread fake news to us? (I'm reffering to the Season 3 Finale where I could have sworn they said themselves that the Mondeo was being killed off).
I think they probably were just following the rumors, not the actual statement (don't know when they released the episode, so I'm not sure exactly if they were going by the rumors or never read the official statement).
I do not see what the hell makes it a 'funny design'. It looks actually decent and has a pretty unique design. As for being a hybrid, so what? Nobody complained about the Enzo/F50/F40 successor LaFerrari being a hybrid sports car, so what makes this any different that this excuse would be tolerated? Also, you don't need to stick to the bloody source material detail to detail always when you revive a old nameplate/car. Besides, there's a thing called evolution. Being a hybrid sports car and such is done in order to be modern yet remain some essence from the original, you can't just give people the same shit every time because otherwise it'd be overdone and lose memorability.
