Was this game made with future hardware in mind?

    This is just a question that popped in my head playing this game for some time.

    If there is one word that I could use to describe this game, it would be "complexity". A lot of it too. Even a high end (mainstream) computer from today would find it difficult to run several-but-less-than-ten cars at a time without dropping frames (and it shows with the recent Traffic Mod).

    While there have been significant strides in optimization, I do think that there is a limit as to how far one can optimize this game. Really, it seems as if this game is designed to run optimally by computers of the future...

    Which brings me to the question.

    Did you (the BeamNG team) create this game with the idea that this game is designed for future computers?

    There's nothing wrong with that, though. It's cool to think that this game is basically a very realistic sneak-peek of the future of virtual car tech. Basically like what NVidia is doing with their RTX Ray Tracing cards (except that admittedly, BeamNG in doing their car physics better than RTX is at Ray Tracing).

    I guess the best part of this is that as time passes, this game's full potential will eventually show itself. This would also give the game a good excuse to have long development periods imo. Like fine wine, it would get better with age.

    This is all just a curiosity I have from one of my favorites on Steam.
    It's a little fun thinking about the thoughts that go behind every large project, like this one.

    I definitely agree with needing extremely high end or future hardware to get the most of this game, especially with the addition of the traffic tool.

    However I do get concerned that the CPU industry changing its focus from clock speed to increased thread count won't suit Beam too well. At least for me most bottlenecks in this game end up being a single thread peaking at 100% (8700k) so unless single threaded performance continues to get pushed future hardware may not help us too much.

    There is the other side that having more threads will allow greater number of AI controlled cars but maintaining a smooth 60FPS or above will still be challenging as these CPUs tend to have lower clockspeed...

    Well we are pretty much approaching the max viable clockspeeds for cpus with 5 ghz, and the minimum size 7 nm. More threads and most importantly more efficient designs are the only way to go

    Definitely - hopefully Beam can adapt over time to be more suited to these types of CPUs, my understanding is it performs quite poorly on low clock speed high thread count systems (as do a lot of other games though...)

    yea basically only time will tell and the game runs 1 core per vehicle. Like were I have 4 cores I can handle 4 cars at 60 fps give or take on my i7-6700HQ, but if I have more vehicles come in like say 8, thats two per core, but I drop to 30 fps for some people with 9900k can handle 4-6 per core and have 60 fps. With the optimizations over the past 3 years I would say its way better because I could only handle 6 so that would be 1.5 cars per core, but now I can handle 2 per core with out going below 30 fps which is good. RTX for the game you wont see that for a long time or at all because of the current engine. The Devs would have to rewrite the engine or switch engines both would take Sooooo much time, effort, and money to do properly. We wouldn't get the major updates twice a year we get now if they were to do that now. But so far the Devs are doing the best they can with game and supporting the community at the same time doing two majoir updates a year, trying to keep mods work they are of the best Devs out there I would say, and if you this Devs keep up the awesome work you guys and women are some the hardest working people out there :):):)

    Well, that's until the companies begin moving from silicon to carbon nanotubes. But that might take a while longer.
    I guess Moore's law will have to be paused for a moment
