I want to get a ps2 but there's a lot of different versions and I don't know which one to get. Im Mostly going to get one to play granturismo 4, so im wondering which version is the best for that game graphics wise.

They will all run it the same. However, if you can you're better off getting a 1st gen PS3 and running the PS2 game on that.

See the problem with getting a PS3 is some games are not compatible from the ps2- ps1 era. While the list may be small it's still there.

Any evidence of this? The first gen PS3 does not emulate PS2 games, it runs them on an actual Emotion Engine chip that the PS2 uses. Some PS1 games may have issues due to them always being emulated, but PS2 games should be fine for EE-equipped PS3 models. I did quite a bit of research on this before I bought my 60 GB PS3.

Also, the disk drive for the old PS3 is much more reliable than any of the PS2 models from my experience. Disk read errors that happened on the PS2 never did on my PS3. The PS3 seems to also be able to read disks in worse condition than the PS2 can.

As I've stated. A very tiny amount of PS2 games wont work on a first gen PS3. There's a list out there with the 10 or so games that wont work, just like how the ps2 only has like 15 ps1 games that wont work.

There are also other caveats: no HDMI support, no FreeMCBoot support, it still has to do the sudo-emulation of PS1 games that the PS2 does, but not quite as well. Games that don't support 1080i output over component (so the vast majority) still don't. Above all, you also have to deal with an early PS3 fat, which were notoriously unreliable. In short, not worth it. You also don't get very much peripheral support as well. It's not a crap experience, but it's simply not an optimal one.

To answer the question of the thread, either a PS2 fat for optimal modding, or a pre-2009 PS2 Slim for FreeMCBoot support. FreeMCBoot is your best friend with the console, it opens up region locked games, allows booting of game roms over USB/hard drive, allows PAL games with the use of the various resolution modifiers available, allows burned PS1 games, and it all runs off a memory card, so it's reversible.
