Why would they move?

 

Been coming up with a kind of rough story for it: Detroit were centers for gang activity in the 70s, and for the safety of their companies Colburn, Gavril, And Bruckell moved out to Boston/Dearborn (Close to detroit but not a hellscape)/Poughkeepsie NYC respectively. DMI didn't leave as they had a lot of heritage there yadda yadda yadda more boomer shit.

 

Detroit has too much auto industry infrastructure to just move it like that. Factories,,suppliers, prospective workers and other employees, etc.

Also, I've had some ideas for an AMC-like brand.

It would also have a Packard-style luxury brand in it, and would originally maintain three brands, with each of these brands' biggest model having a variant of the same chassis and sharing some bodywork structure elements. The midrange brand would be retired after the Eisenhower Depression (so after '60), and the luxury brand would first go a bit downmarket, but then end up closing shop for '69.

The midrange brand would go back into action for 1974, and keep offering upmarketed midsizers of the main brand until that 4th big corporation's closure in the 80s.

(Also yeah the moving Idea is kinda boof'd, gonna scrap that. Y'know I don't see why both ideas can't exist at the same time, due to them being so different.)

So my idea for Colburn, the third corporation is that it would do innovative things in their cars' designs, like an all-unibody and all-OHC lineup, but also sell somewhat mundane vehicles and build them to no higher standards than the rest of the Big Three.

What do you think?

So change the city name, doomer... "Detroit" is a French word meaning "strait". Few examples: Debiter (city created mostly for "production and profit"), Duvent ("du vent" means "windy" so city was placed in open area that tends to wind) or something silly like Dinde (which means "turkey").

Ideas for the Bruckell high-end brand, Regalia:

- 1955 - Introduction of their first car, and the successful beginning of the personal luxury car segment, which it represented. It used a wider version of Bruckell's normal SWB platform.

- 1958 - With the new Bruckell fullsizes rolling in, the PLC gets a more traditional sedan/coupe/convertible counterpart.

- 1961 - The brand also gains a limousine/bigger-than-other-fullsizes sedan/coupe/convertible in their lineup.

- 1965 - The all-new platform comes with "neoclassical" styling, like on the mid-60s Exner studies for Esquire, or his Duesenberg Model D/Stutz Blackhawk.

- 1966 - The Regalia lineup gains a wagon, and it's actually well-received.

- 1968 - A GT car is added, using an uprated pony car chassis to compete with Europe's greats,

- 1969 - To compete with Euro luxury cars, that chassis is stretched, highly uprated and fitted into a sedan/coupe/convertible.

- 1975 - The company goes even lower downmarket and tries to fight the Euros with a luxury compact. Meanwhile, the luxury midsizer is switched to a downsized and upgraded Moonhawk chassis.

I'm kinda running out of ideas beyond this point, and I also don't have an idea for what the brand would do with Regalia's fullsizes after the FWD switch - build them on a platform from the 70s, or go FWD? Or maybe both, like Cadillac at the same point?

Also, they'd use upgraded truck platforms to start making luxury SUVs back in the late 70s or early 80s.

I feel like this works really well. If you've got any suggestions for the Detroit name just give me a holler. Has to start with a D or an I.

 

A quick update in a day with no time for anything else: maybe Regalia would also have a bigger personal luxury car, introduced for 1967.

 

The Regalia luxury SUV would come in 1978, starting the luxury SUV revolution years earlier than in real life by exploiting the lifestyle market.

Also, the brand's later sedans would be based off the Australian Bruckell RWD platforms, but with some odd FWD stuff thrown in

 

Another idea I've had is the Beamverse's Bentley being actually sportier and lower-positioned (with a history of stuff like sports cars and not-as-luxurious entry-level cars), just what the Rolls-Royce owners tried to make it through the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

Why so many brands in such a small country?

For me, it'd be enough to have two or three in Sweden:

- A luxury brand, inspired by Volvo with some of their wilder concepts (e.g. V10 Volvo S80, the US-car-fighter Volvo Philip concept) turned into real cars.

- Jargl - a premium brand situated somewhere between Saab and Volvo, known for their relatively staid and safe cars.

- Optionally a brand based on a mix of Saab, Citroen and Peugeot - trades some of the reliability for lower prices and more equipment, while still making safe cars.

 

Jargl is volvo...

 

Infact, he's imagining Jargl as a mix of Volvo and SAAB as it should be, the luxury brand above it being reserved for out-of-the-ordinary, high-end "wilder concepts"...
