Thats something only you can decide. But I can only highly recommend the experience. As long as you keep it slow and stay focussed, driving through the city centre of a big city during rush hour is probably more dangerous than Stelvio. But I believe we've highjacked this thread by accident ...
Yeah, we might have done that a tiny little bit, yes. So... @matjazt when could we maybe expect the release since you got the permission?
First of all thank you @DoullPepper . Sorry to all for my late response, I will try to upload it asap as i need to shrink it a bit - the limit of uploaded files is short of 30mb... *Do not worry if the discussion goes away from the map... I love those mountain passes as well ...
Here is the map... Performance: The main goal was that this map runs good on my own pc that is 3 years old now with specs: i7 7700K, 16gb ram, geforce 1060 3gb - running avg 55fps @ 2560x1440 Tested also on: i7 4700k, 16gb ram, geforce 970Ti "4"gb - running at 60fps @ 2560x1440 Ryzen 5 3600, 16gb, geforce 2070 6gb - running at 75fps+ @ 2560x1440 Know design problems: Elevation data for the road is not perfect - the best data was from a cyclist The road is a bit too narrow at some points Known technical problems: Mountains - terrain just cut off at the edge of map Patches of wrong groundmodel texture scattered around Road textures incorrect priority order No LOD models Cable car disappearing at some angles Roads with area beside the main road are of lower finish quality size of file AI is not perfect - so have fun with it… Credits: Andrej - many building models / testing Beamng team for the game and used assets DoullPepper - a lot of textures and wind sounds Software used: BeamNG map editor Blender Photoshop Sketchup PixPlant World Machine
Hello @matjazt , nice work! I really like the atmosphere of the map, mainly at the top of the mountain with the village, the ski station... But you road is so dangerous! Is the smoothing of the road volontary rough? ( I know in this kind of mountain roads it can be really hardcore!) And did you do the colors of landscape with a satelite photo or with world machine? Also with the actual stuff of ECA, the vegetation and ground cover textures could be really better. Mainly grass and firs. There are some issues on my old altitude textures.
This is a very good map, but as mentioned above the roads are uneven and some of the corners are steep. I can also see that this map has a lot potential when it comes to offroad trails and rock crawling, driving the rock crawler up the river is a blast.
I took a Pessima and launched it down that same section, looked like a can of beans afterwards. Fun little game: Drive a V6 Melty Pessima at 50 mph down the little section above the rocks and launch it. Gets stuck? 3 drinks. Gets down? 1 drink. Can drive when it hits the bottom? Don't drink.
This map looks interesting, and I think for realism (and vehicle endurance testing, as in BeamNG combustion engines get weaker at high altitudes which is realistic) the map should be located at around 2750 meters altitude according to the "Altimeter app for BeamNG" which Wikipedia says the Stelvio pass is located at IRL. --- Post updated --- Sorry to bother, I went into the game and saw that the map actually has the correct altitude!
Congratulations and many many thanks for this absolutely amazing piece of work. You absolutely nailed the whole atmosphere of the place. It's a shame that BeamNG.drive does not simulate people, as it ist always so crowded up there. I am really stunned by the amazing attention to detail. Be it the little hairpin number signs or the notoriously stickered "Passo dello Stelvio" sign on the top. I especially liked that you included the little roads to "Hotel Franzenshöhe" and even to "Cafe Tibet". What I didn't expect was that you even included the track up to the cable car station and Hotel Thöni which is a great addition. Could it be that it is a little too easy to drive. Normally only 4x4s get up there easily of I am informed correctly because of ice, very loose gravel and some very steep parts. This is the only part I haven't driven myself, because it's not exactly suitable for my street car. However I also own a Lada 4x4 and will tackle this one with it one day. And last not least: you kinda re-opened the short old part of the western ramp on the right side along the mountain (which was closed only a few years ago if I remember correctly) and connected it with the new road. That's a very nice touch there. The only time I ever drove a mountain pass like this one on a computer was the Monte Bondone/Trento track in Assetto Corsa. This road I also know intimately and it's really great to drive. However while the roads have been briliiantly copied, the level of detail (textures) and atmosphere are nowhere near what you have done with Passo dello Stelvio. Many many thanks!! P.S. On the off chance of being impertinent: if you ever get around to it - or if you know someone who wants to do it - a conversion of the Assetto Corsa Bondone track to BeamNG.drive with traffic would be a brilliant thing as well
the thing is in real life the road is really bumpy and steep on some points i remember when i drove it a couple of years ago alot of motorcyclists fell of the bikes because it was so steep that they couldnt reach the ground with theyr bikes
Either this map or this car having a problem. Unable to start the engine after manually shutting down, and dumping the clutch results in TREMENDOUS friction. Watch video
Thank you guys for the nice comments. @DoullPepper the roads are intentionaly rought... The terrain map colors were done with world machine to try matching the real thing and about the textures for groundcover and vegetation I know about the problems but those are still the best textures for me. Some more info about the map and to answer @_Archer_ - The main road from the bottom to the village up is done with more detail as it was the main goal for me, and it was done a few months ago, then it was like why not add some more stuff and all other roads and building were added. The map is based on elevation data from google i think (or was it nasa) do not remember anymore, but it was not enought detailed, so I used different elevation data from cyclists that went on this road, when trying to use the right one I compared those with the altitudes written on some signs on turns, but at the end the best one of those is still a bit off. As for the other roads no elevation data was used, just the roads were placed on the map comparing them with photos. The road that goes to the upper cable car station, it is totaly fictional... there is a road in real life but as @_Archer_ mentioned it is really rought. The ski slopes were placed on the map also but in real life those are off the map a bit further away. Some work still needs to be done on this map - and I hope I find the time to do it, I will definitly take all your opinions in consideration when trying to fix or improve things. @default0.0player I will try to recreate the problem and see if it needs fixing.
One thing i noticed is that at the default spawn point there is a car park normally if i remember correctly but all in all its a really nice map!
My skybox textures hold up well on this. Nice work!. The original and beautiful Altitude materials are certainly a gold standard in my book.
Really great map. Thanks for making it. I do like the roughness; from what I can remember (once drove the Stelvio and the Umbraill with an old, lowered, bumpy Alfa 33), is that the road surface is rough. Especially the top section. Maybe due to damage caused by ice and patching small sections? Especially the Umbraill looked like it had something like a clay road surface which was the opposite from smooth.
One of those maps that makes it feel like another game when combined with a high-quality vehicle(-mod) .. Not that the original BeamNG wasn't great My only "beef" is perhaps with what appears to be a handful of shark teeth along all the curbs ;P Edit: I just also noticed an unusual vehicle behaviour: Ibishu Covet in Race configuration doesn't start again if I turn it off or if it turns off by stalling (in either case says "Engine Locked Up" on the vehicle status widget). I suppose it could be something about the altitude and the air if there's any simulation happening regarding that(?) (In which case this might even be realistic? .. Somewhat. It probably shouldn't entirely "lock up" though)
This is a spot on creation in beamng, i have been to the real thing on the back of a motorcycle with the summer holidays, and yes, you guys say the corners are rough but they are like that in real life.
