This is mine. It is currently getting a lot of work done including linked front suspension, bed mount spare, new axles and diff gears and more.

Also, do any late 90s RC fans recognise my avatar?

I has this thing. self-built (from kit) HPI Savage SS, Runs on nitro, 72km/h top speed, 2 gears(+reverse gear mod), 4.6cc engine, has a 69 Charger body and some funky wheels.
EXCEPT... it has been gathering dust underneath my desk for 5 years because the flywheel cog is all screwed up because grit got into it, and it was like, the 3rd time it did that, and then I couldn't be bothered to fix it again because I couldn't figure out a way to put a shield around the gearset(due to the odd shape of the frame around out). Had more fun building it than driving it, but I get that a lot :/ Took me about 5 days to build iirc, guy from the shop said it would take me at least 3 weeks
Also, there's a hole in the windscreen because the roof of the Charger sits over the motor a bit so it overheats easily, rear window is completely cut out too. On the stock pickup body half the bed is cut out for cooling... So that was always fun in summer.

    I have a lot :)
First the hug-o-bot that I made for science uses a tamiya MO5 chassis
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401500904.749232.jpg
It also rocks back in forth

Secondly my Beamer on the tamiya tt01 chassis ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401500973.949396.jpg

Then my favorite, the tamiya sand scorcher
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401501083.232258.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401501159.998843.jpg driver is missing in action lol

And finally, my stunt machines the tamiya fast attack and my first RC, the 2wd traxxas slash which was given a excellent paint job (sarcasm) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1401501369.056626.jpg
    That concludes my RCs :)

Turns out an RC brushless motor can be used as a 3 phase AC generator. They'll also function on 3 phase AC

    Glad someone recognised it.

And it was the strangest car I have seen in a racing game.

Anyone have suggestions for a good, preferably cheap, starter gas rc? I've been tempted to just grab a cheap small engine and rig one up with spare parts, a PIC, and such.. but time is hit and miss.

I have an electric Electrix dune buggy. I got it a few years ago and the only work I've done on it is replace the ESC because the original one crapped out. Whenever I use it there's this really annoying problem where the steering keeps going to one side and eventually I run out of steering trim and it won't go straight. I also have this ancient Radioshack Thunder Fox II electric 4wd pickup RC. I haven't used it in years. I got it from my uncle and it's beat to hell but it still works.

(Not my pic. Mine is a lot more beat up.)

I would like a nitro powered RC but I'd rather spend my money on other things like improving my laptops and my desktop.

PIC may be the only hobbyist microcontroller architecture I am yet to touch. Got AVR AtTiny and AtMegas, MSP430, ARM and Propeller boards and chips in my collection. No PIC yet though.

Oh, when you say gas, do you mean an actual gasoline powered model or a nitro powered one. Most rc cars using an engine instead of electric motor are actually nitro not gasoline. The gasoline models tend to be much larger and more expensive, never really seen much in the way of beginner kits for them either but they don't need much, pretty much a case of fill her up with premixed gas+2 stroke oil, stick charged battery in for radio and servo, pull starter cord and go. Much higher initial cost, but cheaper to run and maintain than nitro.

I was into RC's, but man, the hobby just costs too much for a poor person like me to have any fun with it. That said, I do have a few just sitting around... Team Durango 2WD short course truck, Iron Track 1/18 Mastadon, an HPI Wheely King (converted to Crawler King spec), a Syma X4 quadcopter, and an Air Hogs Hypertrax. Been too lazy and depressed to drive them though. But they all are in working order mostly. I do have two which are kinda in pieces: An Arrma Fury and a ZD Racing (defunct) 1/16 "monster truck" thing.
