I have attached a youtube compilation of my abilities after trying to teach myself how to drift for about a day. I think the progress is good but I'm far from being proficient. Everything should be in the bottom lefthand corner regarding pedal/wheel control and gears. Looking for any tips to improve and constructive criticism pointing out where I messed up, and what I should have done differently I am using a G920 with default settings and 900 degree rotation
Can't give any tips on skill (I'm learning to and on an Xbox 360 controller ), but do you have the right vehicle setup? After setting up my car per tips on this article: http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/chassis-suspension/modp-1201-basic-drift-chassis-setup/ ...it has gotten a lot easier, especially with more caster. I find the stock 200bx terrible to work with but after 10 minutes of messing around with the tuning, it became a very compliant car for stock power.
I was never good in drifting in this game until after I got good in Asseto Corsa. You seem good, the marshal drift missile is extremely powerful, I personally found its easier to learn with low power cars. I am by no means an expert but I feel good enough to give some advice. 1. In some of your spins you seemed to not counter steer quick enough, I found that higher FFB seems to help. Or you could lower your entrance speed. 2. You are good at throttle control, but more is always better. Just keep messing with your throttle levels as you drive, each car is different but you will learn what levels are good for what drift angles. 3. Not sure if this is technically correct, but I tend to stay in higher RPM values. Get more throttle control. It does mean you change gears more often tho. For me I just drove and drove until I figured it out, Beam is the hardest game to drift in by far tho, although after learning in Asseto I was surprised by how my skills transfered over. Here is a video of me doing the same run as you. Sorry about quality, hopefully youtube fixes that. Once again im not a expert, but figured id chime in. EDIT: I am using a Logitech g25 with FFB and 900 degrees rotation if you are curious, if you want to see my setting ill gladly send them over.
Thank you, I'll definitely take a look at your settings, if I don't like them too much, it could always be a good baseline for a custom feel I find later on. I've been trying to mess around with braking, seeing how to adjust my entries, I'll watch your big entry a couple of times, see what I can learn from that
For sure here are my settings, they are a bit weak because I do some stupid stuff lol, so they might need adjusting, like you said. But a good test maybe.
I want to add to this with the knowledge I've gained throughout my video game drift history. However, I'm not quite sober/I'm terrible at explaining things. So what I'm doing to add to this is providing a vanilla version of what I consider the most fun 200bx drift tune I could come up with so far. Stage 1 turbo, heavy block, skinny standard tires, refined suspension/wheel angle tuning. I agree in that the grand marshal is a good car to learn in but not with the default drift tune. I'd go for the police marshal, put on drift steering, manual transmission, and maybe the stage 1 supercharger at most. That alone has a much more enjoyable feeling to me then the drift marshal. Back to the 200bx though. It took me a long while to get what I wanted in the 200bx's handling. Default drift was a no go and would avoid at all costs, and throwing custom parts to a stock 200bx doesn't play nice either. It's touchy with suspension height and toe etc. I started to figure out the tuning bit by bit and this car is now, in my opinion, the most satisfying and rewarding feeling I've gotten out of beamng. I like for you guys to have a go with it and see what you think. Perhaps you might even have some improvements with a fresh set of eyes and hands. TrippySilviaDriftVanilla.zip <--- 200bx vanilla tune download I couldn't upload just the .pc tune file itself, I had to zip it. So you'll have to unzip, then place inside: Documents/BeamNG.drive/vehicles/coupe 100% vanilla, no mods. Hope this helps, slide on! Edit: This tune was built on the bumpy roads of Jungle Rock Island. --- Post updated --- I tried to record some of what the 200bx tune is all about. Quality isn't great and recording had me nervous, but I think I did a decent enough job of showing how and where I drift it.
Thank you for the drift setup, I’ll definitely try to use that. I started out with the Marshall because I like the heavy feel, and it’s easier to me to just add power or clutch kick to initiate the drift. I should learn how to use the handbrake, so that will take some practice.
I tried out the Marshall Police setup, wayyy more forgiving than the Drift Missile. Much better to learn on by miles. I've been able to get more consistent and throw down some better lines, making it much more enjoyable of a learning experience. Still have a long way to go, though. Here's an update video using you guys' advice so far (There are a couple of big mistakes around the 1:00-1:10 mark but fairly clean otherwise):
I've included a short update video for you guys to show how your advice has helped. Just look in the comment above this one. Your FFB profile has a really nice feel once the strength is kicked up.
Here's the video, sorry I wasn't too clear on where to find it. Let me know if there's still any issues
That was a really good run! Good lines and great throttle control. Now all of it is really up to you. Just keep driving, trying different cars. Everyone has got a different drifting style so your gonna have to find out what you like. I would recommend tuning an ibishu 200bx your self. Messing with suspension and stuff (if you want). Personally for me most of the official drift cars are not my style so I need it tune them myself. Mostly its just keep practicing and tuning, I don.t know too much about tuning other than decent amount of negative camber in the front, and little bit of negative in the rear. All of the other setting I tend to leave.
I've been drifting since I've got beamng in 2014 can offer some tips and have a Saitek wheel but I mostly play on keyboard If you have no luck i'm here to help hope you all are staying safe and keep on playing beamng!
I tried leaving skid marks on all sections for that run, and that line seemed to be the smoothest and easiest way to do so. I still need to get fairly comfortable with initiations other than hammering the power until the back end breaks loose, and learning how to use my brake pedal. There's no better way to learn than ripping the handbrake myself, though
Initiations were always an issue for me. I never used the handbrake, not sure why, instead I always used weight transfer. Only recently have I really used the handbrake to throw the car, its nice once I got the hang of it. I think im gonna buy a USB handbrake, that should be fun.
Awesome, I see big improvements already. A few more things I can see to help improve are as follows: 1. The initiations inbetween drifts. When you're going from high angle and starting to straighten to transition. Try to anticipate your steering, matching with the angle of the car. In your vid, you're holding steering angle while the car is already in motion to change direction. Once you have passed straight and going into angle again, your steering is great. Your transition speed is perfect, just gotta match up your steering heading towards center. For me I see this as trying to keep the steering centered, riding the inside edge of ffb, pushing the wheel towards center. If that makes sense.. Can't wait for the ffb to straighten for you. 2. Now this one maybe personal preference cause I know some people love limiter, but I don't. It negatively effects consistent rear wheel speed. And in a way, shortens the drift line curve of choice. (again, if that makes sense lol) Like the riding inside ffb for steering, it's the same for throttle control. I try to use just enough throttle to keep the rears spinning. To much rear wheel spin= higher chance of over rotating/more need to steer. The absolute number one thing I love about Beamng, is the pedal feel. There is soo much feedback in good pedal control. Feel every bit of driveline, all the flexes and forces. No other game has this much feel of what happens inbetween the pedal and the tires. Pedal control is everything is drifting, the smoother you can pedal, the more "mindless" steering gets. A handbrake, even a cheap flight joystick is very useful. Handbraking is not only an easy way to start a drift, but is the most effective way to straighten the drift line curve while staying at angle. Also mixed with some foot brake, is ideal for slowing down quickly. Can see in my video earlier, I'm almost never using the handbrake without some brakes with it. Now I believe the police marshal comes with a stock block, and really doesn't need more. but a good solid addition to na power would be the heavy blocks more then the performance blocks. Heavy blocks add more low/mid torque where as performance blocks make top range spikey without rpm limit changes. This is much much more noticable with the 200bx. I only say this because I'm unsure at this time if police marshal comes with stock or perf 1 block. Hooray for bad explanations haha, but LOVE to drift! Keep on practicing man! You're well on your way to greatness
