Why is the new "Race Update" taking so long to download. It is only downloading at about an avg of 30 KB/s!

Oh you know, it's not like the ENTIRE community is trying to get it at the same time. Some people had to deal with 3KBs, so shut your mouth.

Not the entire community, just the ones that don't have Windows 8 fighting them with error messages about errors that arent there...

Not really an option. I cannot forward any port whatsoever because my ISP are a bunch of -beep-heads that seem to think forcing you to use their -beep- tier modems in order to port forward is good business practice.

Is that rear engined tobacco pipe doing something to you? Port forwarding is a function of the router not modem (and ISP's cannot change that, it is a simple case of that is how fucking networks work) but lets assume thats simply a case of you confusing the 2 devices (besides, some ISP's provide modem, router, switch or hub and wifi access point in one device these days). Port forwarding has always been a case of having to alter settings on the router so your ISP are simply doing what technology is supposed to be doing....

I have always hated port forwarding because it only works for a day or so (Dynamic IPs or something) and it is a pain in the ass to get the site/IP to work to access the options. (I already have the update, but if you do have an easier way to tell me how to do this, as opposed to the guides I have had a hard time understanding, it might help me and others with the download problems.)

i wish I could just list some simple steps to port forwarding, but sadly it depends highly on the routers firmware.

Port forwarding should be permanent though, non-static IP shouldn't change your forwarding, only the IP address the other person has to type in to reach you (Look up DynDNS though if its something you do regularly). Port forwarding as a principle is simple, all data coming at the router on a particular port will be forwarded to the same port on the device specified. Port 22 for example is commonly used for SSH, I could forward that to a linux server, if I connected to my home IP address on port 22 the router would forward that over to the server.

Oh, okay. All I know is that when I used it for games, it would work for a day(s), and then the person I was playing with would be unable to connect. I may be able to try again sometime again.

they would just need your home IP, the forwarding system should still remain in place

Hmm. Then again, I do remember my friend being a prick who messed around a lot, so I bet it probably worked well before. Maybe I will try to play Gmod with someone on a private session sometime. (Do you know which port that requires forwarding for?)

ATT closes them. If I use the ATT-supplied 2Wire modem and I forward a port it's actually open. If I use my own hardware, which is so much better than the ATT-supplied 2Wire modem, ATT forces that port closed.

ATT are assholes and they will not let me forward ports unless I use their junk-tier hardware. It's stupid. I know damn well how to forward ports, but I cannot do so because my ISP refuses to let me while using quality hardware.

I am telling you it must be user error, a) got a steam friend using a buffalo modem with port forwarding on ATT, b) port forwarding is on the router which the ISP have have no control over or method of accessing. It would be like the power company preventing use of a cord that they didnt authorise, they have no physical way to block it.

And I'm telling you that it isn't. If I go plug an ATT 2Wire 2701-HB-G in I can forward ports in all of ten seconds or so. Piss easy. If I use my third party router and seperate modem, go into the modem, set it to forward all ports, set the router to forward the desired ports, they stay nice and closed.

It's not user error. I even called ATT and they outright confirmed it. If I want to forward any ports I have no choice but to use their own hardware. They close them on their end otherwise.
