in regard to the ID3, what do you actually not like about it? the "egg" shape is kind of weird, but so was the shape of the beetle (and I consider the Id3 the possible replacement to the golf, like how the golf replaced the beetle).
and in regard to the e46, the hangover from the 90's was still lingering:

 

First of all, I don't like its shape. It looks like a minivan, but it's not. Or even better, like a pillow on wheels. Beetle is another story, as it's design was concieved in 1930s, when such a shapes were modern. I'm not a big fan of Beetle either, but Beetle looks million times better. Honestly, VW should've better made a electric Golf 8, like PSA is doing, making one car, but whole variety of drivetrains.

 

currently the Golf and ID3 will coexists for a while and theyll see what sells better (wich currently my guess is that it will be the Golf)
