Fatal error downloading new update

When I go to launch the game, I get to the stage where the updater opens, and finds the proxy server, but it takes longer than it should, then fails with a fatal error saying "could not find number.txt" or "Version.txt" ( can't remember soz ) so I am trying the new updater right as I am typing this, but my question is, will it get rid of any installed mods? because I have around 30 car mods, and 10 maps, and I would not be a happy chappy if I had to re download them.

and for future preference, if the new updater fails, how am I meant to bypass this error?!

The updater you're using is the old one. You will need to download the new version located here: http://beamng.com/service/latestorder
