Hello I have a question: I plan to make maps that represent fictional, but realistic landscapes of other planets. I also want to alter one moon map created by CraftyMutt, since this map didn’t went through any progress after it‘s last update. I really want to adopt his map. i just can’t start a conversation with CraftyMutt and thus can‘t ask him for permission to alter and uploading his moon map. Does anyone know how to contact him? Superneutrino
Well, it looks like you are unfortunately out of luck, as you need his explicit permission to modify it. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but it is the unfortunate truth of Fair Use. Hope this helps.
Thx, but I really hope that there could be another way to get his permission (or not) - like contacting the BeamNG - Team: Maybe they know what’s up with him (Just a thought). Why do you ask? Btw I don‘t know if CraftyMutt is still on.
It would be interesting to know what I could do in such case (after the forum rules) - maybe the rules could get updated. Maybe I would have to write at the author section in the info.json file: my_name (originally made by CraftyMutt). Something like that only would have to be done when the author, who’s content has been partly used/changed, isn’t online and can’t be asked for permissions. It’s just a thought.
ok so here is an exact answer. Unless you plan to release it then no You can do whatever you want to that map if you don't release it
I forgot to mention WHAT I changed on the moon map, maybe then my question is much easier to understand: I changed the appearance of the sun, the whole textures of the Terrain - I copied dirt_loose_dusty from Utah and also changed the dds. Files so that the Terrain looks more like a proper moon surface - so that dust can be kicked up. At least I set the whole brightness of the much higher. When I then just would make my very own terrain, would that count as my own map?
Ok, when CraftyMutts map would be gone from the repository, like it happened to the first moon map (I guess it was uploaded back in 2015 or 2013), could I then make my own moon map? Or would I even then still have to ask him for permission?
You would STILL need his explicit permission. Definitive answer: If you modify that map, it is fine, so long as you never upload it. The Moon map is still his property, you can't just upload it after it's gone from the repo. It's like breaking into an abandoned military base, painting it a different color and calling it your own. Basically, you can only use it as a personal mod, sorry. However, you can still create a completely new map, using none of his resources, and that would be fine, but nothing from CraftyMutt can be used.
That‘s what I did yesterday with the standard template map of BeamNG and what I wanted to express in this post: Are the IDs of the map objects the problem (scattersky, thelevelinfo, spawn points)? Do they have to be unique, so that I would be able to upload the map? And my final question: one texture file of the moon map comes from Utah. Is this file a ressource of BeamNG or of CraftyMutt?
Why don't you just make a scratch new one without reusing any resources from that one instead of copy+pasting files??? Using only in-game stuff and your own stuff, new IDs for everything and stuff
I think there may be a big misunderstanding: I said that I plan and already did a new moon map for myself from scratch (only with in-game stuff), without any files from CraftyMutt‘s map. Or did surprisinguser1 mean a map that doesn’t resemble a moon landscape? Sorry when I ask questions over questions, but I want to understand, if the basic Idea of a moon landscape also does belong to craftymutt, or not. Of course I do not want to use his ressources (but in-game stuff). First it seems to me that I can’t make my own moon map, because there were moon maps already uploaded earlier and that I can’t get CraftyMutt‘s permission. That’s completely ok. I copied my sky settings and in-game-stuff to a new map with unique IDs of everything. Not the settings from CraftyMutt‘s map! I also could’ve just misunderstood what surprisinguser1 said in his last post at the end, but I thought just by copying my personal values to a new map I wouldn’t violate the rules: I interpreted that part like so: When I make my own moon map from scratch, by using only in-game stuff, everything would be fine with uploading (?) But I also could be wrong at this specific part and he meant that I have to make „none-moon-map“. If I‘m not allowed to make any moon map, I won’t upload it of course. I hope that I expressed myself well enough this time.
yes, you can also make your own textures and models and such, but taking something from someone without their permission or crediting them is stealing
ok now I really know what I have to do in order to make my own moon map I know that this is forbidden - I never wanted to make the impression as if I wouldn’t know such logical thing. At this point I‘m really sorry and I also want to excuse myself And thank you all for your help and patience! I will make everything from scratch now.
