Mods such as the Aygo are generally discouraged because in most cases they're not legit. The crash itself is fine, it's just those mods

Unknown or Undetermined, Dansworth American Bus D1500 Type-C Front Engine, owned and operated by Classic Beam Trips LLC, Fatal accident occurred May 15th, 2020, in So Cal-Nevada Interstate, USA:

    (overview of accident scene)
    • Location: So Cal Nevada Interstate, USA
    • Date & Time: 05/15/2020, 1904 EST
    • Vehicle(s): Dansworth American Bus D1500 Type-C Front Engine
    • Owner/Operator: Classic Beam Trips LLC
    • Vehicle Damage: Destroyed
    • Defining Event: Unknown or Undetermined
    • Injuries: 3 (Fatal)
    • Type: Test

    - Analysis:
The coach bus was on a local test drive when it crashed into a tunnel concrete support beam in daylight visual meteorological conditions. The three occupants were fatally injured.

The commercial bus driver departed on a local drive to test the accident bus, which had extensive overhauls and upgrades in the preceding weeks after it was purchased by the new operator, there was a secondary bus driver and a company engineer along the with the main driver. At about 1822, the driver reported a "minor brake problem" while driving in the area of the southern CA-NV Interstate. The driver radioed again at 1825, saying that the engineer onboard was able to resolve the issue. No more radio messages were received from the driver.
At about 1902 EST, multiple interstate drivers reported seeing the bus driving on the right lane at a "medium speed", no problems or abnormal things were reported by the eyewitnesses. At 1903 EST, the coach bus approached a highway tunnel, a taxi driver who witnessed the bus said everything looked normal. At 1904 EST, two drivers noticed the bus veer to the right and crash into the tunnel's right support beam at high speed. The front of the bus was completely crushed and emergency services were called immediately.

Examination of the vehicles revealed that there were no anomalies consistent with a preimpact failure or malfunctions. The investigators were unable to determine what caused the "minor" brake problem the bus encountered during the trip about half an hour before the accident. Furthermore, the investigators were unable to examine the driver's steering wheel or front control mechanisms due to the extensive damage.

A study of the driver's history showed he was familiar with the accident location and overall highway layouts, his history was clean and no tickets of any kind were given to the driver during his 34 long career.

The driver's seat used on the bus was an old sport seat used by the previous bus owner, which was a racing company for heavy vehicles. It could not be determined if the bus driver encountered problems with said seat, but investigators were able to confirm the driver was unfamiliar with the type. Additionally, toxicology testing performed on the driver at the Forensic Sciences Laboratory was negative for carbon monoxide, ethanol, and drugs.

The investigation was unable to confirm if the bus was under control at the time of impact, no tire/brake marks were found on the direction leading to the accident scene, which was different from what the two eyewitnesses reported. Also, no preimpact failure or malfunctions were discovered during the course of the investigation. Therefore, the investigators are unable to determine the cause of the bus's collision with the visible obstacle (concrete support beam).

    - Probable Cause:

    • A collision with a visible obstacle for reasons that could not be determined based on available evidence.

    - Preliminary Information:
On May 5th, 2020, at around 1904 eastern standard daytime, a Dansworth D1500 Type-C Front Engine Coach Bus, owned and operated by the Classic Beam Trips LLC, was on a local test drive in the southern CA-NV Interstate area when it crashed into a tunnel support beam. The certified commercial bus driver, one certified secondary bus driver, and one company engineer were fatally injured and the bus was destroyed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident.

Multiple eyewitnesses reported that the bus looked normal and nothing unusual was noticed during the hour leading to the accident. The bus was last seen "veering to the right" before crashing into the visible obstacle (figure 1), as reported by two drivers.

(Figure 1: accident location, as seen from the direction of travel)
An on scene examination of the vehicles revealed that there were no anomalies consistent with a preimpact failure or malfunctions. The vehicles was transported to a secure facility for further examination.

The bus was originally built as a school bus and operated as one for the previous 20 years. According to the manufacturer company, A Type “C” school bus is constructed utilizing a chassis with a hood and front fender assembly. The entrance door is behind the front wheels. A “type C school bus” also includes a cutaway truck chassis or truck chassis with cab, with or without a left side door, and with a GVWR greater than 21,500 pounds (Figure 2). The bus has a total of 24 passenger seats, its built on the T-75 frame, and it can haul up to 15 tons of additional weight. The accident bus was converted into a race variant for the 3 years preceding the accident, and it was under going upgrades to transform it into a passenger variant. The sport driver's seat was still used in the accident bus at the time of the crash.

(Figure 2: Identical bus to the one involved in the original school variant, photo via the manufacturer)

    - Damage:
The coach bus came to the rest next to the support beam. Impact damage was noted to multiple passenger windows in the left and right side of the bus. Extensive crushing damage was observed in the entire front section of the bus, which was rotated at around 90 degrees to the left, going all the way to the third passenger window behind the driver's seat direction (Figure 3). The passenger compartment was unreachable via the front section of the bus, so the emergency door was used during the emergency operations. The windshield destroyed. The engine was substantially by the impact, along with the surrounding materials. The first two rows of passenger seats were severely effected by the impact (figure 4).
