Like many others here, I would like to see the replay system include options to drive with recorded replay. There would be no collision between replay car and players live car. I do not believe this is something out of reach for BeamNG developers, not in the slightest. Another way could be modding, maybe. What does everyone think about approaching a "ghost replay" option via mods? Your opinion on difficulty level creating a ghost replay mod: a. not happening because of restrictions? b. a few months with a team? c. easy peasy lemon squeezy? I'm by no means an expert in this kind of stuff but i don't think it can be done with the engine as is. I don't really know how the replay system works but i beleve you can't deactivate collisions between specific objects. One way to do it though would maybe to record the position and rotation of the ghost car and display a 3D model without any kind of physics.
The game could just switch to Simplified Collisions for the duration of the replay which would make your car able to phase-through the "ghost" but still interact with all the things in your surroundings
But this would break all of the traffic if there was any. Also generally the replay system I think is way too buggy to implement this.
I'm not sure what you are saying. Why would there have to be ai driven cars on a ghost replay racing yourself??
In my experience so far the AI is expected to be lame and sort of retarded at times. Anyhow, this topic is not about racing with the AI. Agent_Y, imagine this. You choose your favorite track and vehicle. You record your laps. You go to the replay list and instead of choosing to watch from inside the recorded vehicle you are given the choice to spawn with the replay car. Line yourself up near the replay car, press play and race with yourself. There could be all kinds of fun ideas with this option available. The main reason for me to use a replay ghost car of myself is to RACE WITH MYSELF to see a number of things.. such as the point of view from another moving car... perhaps I would like to beat my own best time visually and with clock. Best idea yet would be multi-replays playing at the same time, created and driven by the same person... perhaps drifting close for a cool video?? Ya yaaaa right!??
Yeah that would be really cool, I know. But still the replay system is so janky that idk if it's possible in this game.
Well perhaps the replay system is underdeveloped and that would make sense, because it's not vital to the core system. Yet from a developer's point of view it should not be a dreaded job since most of the required modules and programming are already a part of the core system being used by other player options.
The ghost car just has to be a basic visual representation of the cars position/rotation/speed from a previous lap. It doesn't even need to be super accurate, so long as it matches the lap time it's ghosting and the current vehicle can't collide with it. Reminds me of the old Gran Turismo ghosts. Has anyone attempted to make a mod for this yet?
