While I see that there are a couple similar threads on the forum, I think this merits another.

I would definitely enjoy seeing fire in the final game, but not merely as an animated prop. Here are my thoughts on how I would attempt to implement fire, if I found it to be possible.

    1. When Jbeaming (JBeaming? J-Beaming? I need some syntax help here) a vehicle, I would strategically place multiple semi-random trigger points ("igniters") in the areas most likely to be the source of a fire, each one of which may or may not ignite a fire upon certain conditions being met, such as beam values indicating catastrophic damage to a fuel line.
    2. In the code for the various materials, I would specify whether each one was combustible or not, and for those that are, I would specify which properties need to change during the combustion process; i.e., rubber should become increasingly tacky (increased grip), plastic should rapidly lose rigidity, and glass should shatter. Cloth can just rapidly disappear.
    3. After an igniter triggers, I would devise a way for the fire to spread along other nearby combustible materials, node by node, with properties like temperature and wind affecting how quickly it spreads.
    4. I would try to make the appearance of the fire very dynamic and dependent upon several different factors, so that the user doesn't see the same "flameloop" every time they have a fire.
    5. I would also take a stab at charring and scorch marks, and try to apply them in a similar manner to dirt or paint scratches. Obviously these would be cosmetic in nature.

The addition of fire would boost the realism of the game, and expand the mission possibilities. Plus, as mentioned elsewhere, it would look cool.

I know that not all computers are equipped for the task of properly simulating a vehicle and properly simulating a fire. If fire were implemented like I have described and the decision were up to me, I would probably distribute it as DLC.

NOTE: Simply thoughts. I don't even know if this is possible, let alone reasonable.

like you already said, there are a million threads suggesting this...But at LEAST you kind of put a bit of effort into your post, instead of: "devs, put fyre ingayme so we can watch do damage bernz!!"

I am sure the devs would love this, but that would also take a lot of CPU power, at the moment they are trying to optimize what is already there so more and more people can play with better FPS on low to mid-grade rigs. This is something that can be implemented much further down the line. But after you broke it all down, looks like it may be possible.

Welcome to the forums!! and Thanks for Supporting the community!

You sound like a pyromaniac ;)

We can think about such once we got the basics done :)

[Dramatically] You are mistaken; I am not a pyromaniac, I am a scientist!

Seriously, though, thanks for the reply. You are two-for-two in responding to my threads.
