GPU Upgrade - GTX 750?

My current GPU is an ATI HD6780, it's a little bit dated now and noticeable noisy when the fan starts going. I want to replace it. Regardless I have to open up my computer to re-seat my CPU cooler since my idle temperatures are worryingly high so while I'm at it I might as well get rid of my noisy AMD card and upgrade it. It's also past due time for me to go back to NVidia! The HD6780 is perfect, it runs all my games perfectly well but the fan noise is a major serious let down. My budget allows for me to go stupid expensive but I'm not stupid so let's say, ideally, a price under $200. The obvious choice is the GTX 750 as being the best bargain, the 760/770/780 are showing minimal gains over the 750 but with ridiculous price increases. I noticed some comments made here yesterday to somebody else to wait for the next generation but I know what new generation prices are like. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going for a GTX 750. Who here has one? Which manufacturer? Do you like it? Is it noisy? Is the stock cooler adequate or is there an aftermarket cooler I should pair it up with? My PC case is an Antec 1200 so space is not an issue. My PSU is a Corsair HX 650 so power delivery should be adequate.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?

Really? Minimal gains? The 760 is A LOT more powerful than the 750.

I'm no techie, the specs between the 750 and 760 looked minimal to me but that's why I came in here asking questions. Thanks for the input already. So it seems the 750 is just a waste of money over my current GPU. Thanks for the tips, anything else I need to know?

 

I'd recommend MSI GTX 760, other manufacturers such as EVGA, ASUS are quite overpriced for no real benefit and MSI is as good if not better. GIGABYTE is quite cheap as well but I can't vouch for that one.

 

I'm doing more homework, damn why is it not as simple as A, B or C! So it seems the 750 is a slight downgrade from the HD6780, the 760 is a minor upgrade while the 770 looks to be considerably better than the 760 but for almost a hundred dollars more. I guess then, the question now is, do I go for a 760 or a 770? If I wait for the next generation then the 770 prices should come down if I'm not mistaken but how long of a wait will that be? I'm in no hurry but I was hoping to get it all done today since I'm going to the store for a camera although that's not urgent either...

I've had ASUS, MSI, and EVGA cards in the past and I don't lean specifically towards any certain manufacturer. I am an Asus fanboy but even I'll admit that they are no longer what they used to be. In fact, out of all my GPUs I've owned the only one to die on me was my Asus GF Ti4200 but the machine it was in had poor air circulation.

 

The 760 is not a minor upgrade. With the 760 you can play 1080p and 60 fps in most games.

 

OK so then it's quite clear now, I go for the 760 or I spend an extra hundred bucks and get a 770 which appears to be a surprisingly considerable step up from the 760. The main question now: is my PSU adequate for the 770?

 

wat, where the heck do you shop, the EVGA gtx 760 is cheaper then the msi, not the other way around :/ (not being a fanboy either before you go say something like that, just saying that atm the evga card is cheaper, obviously that could change at any time)

@op as everyone else has said, the 760 will be a huge improvement, and it would be best to just go with that.

and yes, your psu will be fine for your current cpu and a gtx 760

 

Yeah 650W will power a 770 with no problems.

 

Depends on what's your monitor. As for me, I own a 22" ~5 y.o Samsung @1680x1050, so GTX 770 would not make a difference for me (though 760 is enough to play MOST games @60FPS even @FHD). If you have a 24" display or larger and intend to use AA or AF with multipliers higher than 2, I'd go with GTX 770, though it costs considerably more.

 

The size of the display doesn't matter, just the resolution. A 5" 4k screen is 10x harder to drive than a 80" 1080p display.

 

I run two 19" monitors though I rarely have the second enabled. I would love to buy a bigger monitor but the 19" suits my needs perfectly. I won't rush the purchase, I'll leave it for another day or two before I make up my mind. The 760 looks like the deal to go for but for an extra hundred bucks that 770 delivers a pretty good jump up from the 760.

 

For dual monitors I'd recommend the 4GB 770.

 

2gb vram is barely enough for 1080p gaming nowadays. BF4, Watch Dogs, and a few other upcoming games will need more. IIRC BF4 used around 2.3GB, and Watch Dogs around 2.7GB with high textures, and +3GB with ultra textures. Oh, there's also Battlefield Hardline, that one was around 2.3GB as well.

 

As someone with a 1440p display and a 2GB 760, MUH ANTIALIASING D:

With the QHD display, I've decided AA is the first to go if I've overused my VRAM.

The 4GB 770 will run me over five hundred dollars after taxes come in. That is way too much money so not a great idea but it made me think. In the $350 range (which is still kinda steep to my likings) I can debate myself between a 4GB 760 or a 2GB 770. More memory vs. higher memory speed...

Yes, that's obvious, I took that for granted as larger displays often have larger resolution.

You should go with 770 then, it should handle 2 displays with no problem. You should make use of larger memory for the 2 screens worth of textures.
