Ok, I asked the BeamNG Subreddit what sort of map they were after. I got a mix of responses, but there was a lot of interest in a mountain map. I've started work on one, shown a few videos, but wanted to have a post here, so I could update on progress as I go, and more importantly get feedback/suggestions on the way (can't promise I'll be able to implement them of course...). All constructive criticisms welcome. The map is based on this area of the Alps: https://www.google.com/maps/@46.7064792,10.7965253,60333m/data=!3m1!1e3 It is using Lidar data from an area approximately 50x50km (note, because of the resolution limitations of the heightmap and terrain, I've dropped this down to around 16x16km for now. I might look at a larger effort in the future, but this is more than enough for me. I'm working at 1 terrain 'pixel' to 2m, which is about as big as I can go without it losing detail and interest. A range of terrains/approaches Dirt tracks: Snow/mountains Lakes (and maybe some rivers at some point) Roads (some long as straight, some meandering, and some sharp hairpins, etc.). Woodland. I've tried to keep it fairly light, as I want this to be able to run well for most. I might boost the number of trees later if it is all running well still. Buildings/towns/villages I need to do loads more on this. It just takes time. I've used the Italy buildings for now, although will take some others from the vanilla maps when needed. (I can't do pavements... this is an issue. I'm looking for an easy way to get around it, but really can't be arsed to go down the blender route...) Misc other pics... Let me know what you think. Any ideas/suggestions/etc.?
Yeah, It's a test road for now, I'm going to use a PBR version later, once I get things in place. The problem with a lot of the vanilla maps is they use a clever system for the edges that adds loads of time. So I need some complete road textures that are PBR to use. I'll probably add my own once things are working properly.
Cheers. It'll definitely have AI on the asphalt roads. I'll probably not let them spawn on the dirt tracks as I prefer them quiet, but I might allow them to drive on them so it'll still use them for routes. I'll also definitely add some time trials. Probably a mix of long and short, asphalt/dirt etc. Haven't tried making scenarios yet, but will take a look. I'd like one around the airport's with the planes, but would be dependent on having those mods download. Probably just the Cessna as the others are a bitch to land. Any suggestions welcome though.
Cool! I think it´s gonna be a good map. Suggestions? Yes. A Offroad Mountain. Railtracks (For Trains) Border Checkpoint
You straight up just nailed the area I live in with the Google Maps coordinates. My home city is Meran/Merano right in the East of what shows up when clicking your link. I guess you aimed for Stilfserjoch/ Passo Stelvio? As I'm driving the surrounding roads weekly, I'm super hyped about your project and am looking forward on what you'll come up with. If you need some pics of certain spots I could possibly hook you up with some photos, if it's not too hard to get to the place.
Nice. Wasn't aiming for anywhere specifically, just tried a few of the tiles from the lidar data and this one looked like a good mix. It looks a fun area to drive in. I've been using the street view images a bit to try to match, but I'm not likely to go for making it too close to reality. I haven't got the time to devote to that. I will just throw in some small town areas and other bits of interest for now.
How large is it, it looks to be 8192 x 8192 (thats just a guess tho) Edit: nvm just read the first post, sorry. I think this map would be great for the garage to garage scenario.
I've been applying some PBR textures to the map. Man is that a difficult process... Absolute nightmare of setting changes and tricky little image changes. But I'm getting there. Learning a lot on the way... Here is how I'm doing with the snow so far.
