    WIP alpha version

8x8 km open desert map. This started as a suspension test terrain for desert trucks, then it has been serving as my world editor sand box while slowly turning in to Africa themed driving map. Lots of high speed dirt between some detailed points of interest. Features so far:

Rough roads, old railway, long seashore

Cave, few settlements, 8+1 time trials

Lost diamond. Shines in pinkish hue. Finders keepers :)

The main infrastructure layout is about done. A few new locations and connections are planned, then the rest is decorative work. I'm averaging 75 fps now with i5/1050Ti/16. I'll keep adding stuff and when I start nearing the limited 60 the map is finished.

General feedback and mod conflict/bug reports are welcome.

What are the coordinates up to? They're the one I have to type in in World Editor when moving the train and I'll get an advantage, correct?

It is the quickest way to get the train on tracks.

Spawn a train anywhere, and pause the game (J).
Open the editor (F11), select the train and copy-paste the coordinates one by one into the Inspector window's XYZ position and rotation fields.
Train will move to the tunnel near the Railway Station spawn point and is ready to drive after unpausing the game.

At the harbour end of the tracks you can use the train railer. Spawn the train straight but slightly above it, and it should wiggle its way on to the tracks when you start driving.

    --- Post updated ---
One of the cave zones (Zone_10) is too small. Day lighting turns on if the camera gets outside of it, ruining the whole spelunking adventure. I fixed it for the next update.

If you keep falling through the cave floor when respawning, disable the smart recovery system in Options -> Gameplay.

Well done! I´ve been looking for an african themed map since the beginning of beam ng. Something that resembles the open landscape of the kalahari desert or similar areas of southern africa. this is the closest so far.
I know that this is an WIP alpha version, still I am going to give you some feedback which I hope might be of some use for your further development.

The few detailled points of interest so far are very well done. Nothing much to say here. In the largest town on the corner of the map, there are kinda weird curbstones along the road which make it difficult to drive up to the buildings next to it. I dont know if that is intendet or not but its a bit inconvenient having it on both sides of the road.

    The Terrain:
Looks good so far, even though its mostly one ground texture. What does look odd are the cliffs. There is no cliff texture and some cliffs just look weird an unnatural. So it would be better with either cliff textures and some rocks or just dont make any cliffs. Also, in some spots on the map the terrain looks very much like its been done with the raise/lower brushes. There are weird hills, to steep and kind of unrealistic looking at the beach and also some in the back of the map.

    My main point:
I can´t really tell if the main terrain is done with brushes or comes from an imported heightmap. The shape of the erosion in the landscape kind of tells that its from a heightmap. What makes the whole thing look kind of artificial are the square mountains around the map. What would give this map a way more realistic and immersive feeling is if it would feature some hills or mountains that exceed the borders of the map. A good example of what I mean by this is the Sandy Mountains map.
Textures that follow the terrain also do the trick. I don´t know how to do this in Beamng but since its featured on some maps (also sandy mountains) there has got to be some way.

I know that the terrain is already there, so maybe this is for another map, still this is my main point on how to improve this map.

I actually tried several times to work with the editor to create such a map myself but my limited knowledge always stopped me. This is why I highly encourage you to work on such an africa themed map, the beginning and details, buildings and shacks etc are great. These details combined with a scenic and realistic looking terrain and textures would make for an awesome map. Please continue!

    Thanks for the feedback.

The terrain is done solely with the editor, and the tool marks are clearly visible. It's still very "stepped" and in rough form. It will never look as good as computer generated and painted height maps. Hopefully mine gets better as I keep detailing it. I'll cover some of cliffs with rocks, but it's slow work.

The purpose of this terrain was and still is to blast through it with your fastest offroader and to tune it to survive that. It's best at dusk, dawn, or night time so you can read the terrain with your headlights on. So the ugliness never bothered me much :).

Using the three backdrops (and the sea) was an easy way to block the map edges. Even if I could create a holemap backdrop, I think it's too late to add one now, and would wiser to start over with another map.

The GIF I posted earlier shows the open sewer curbs I tried to replicate in the village. I'll add more crossing points and make them smoother.

I switched the traffic to left side, and fixed many problems with the original AI routing. Needs some more testing though.

Yes I see, its perfectly fine for that ;)

Ah, makes sense now with the sewers!

So if you are ever planning to do a new map, I´ll gladly offer my help for stuff like heightmap creation, level design and map detailing. I always wanted to have a southern african themed map in Beamng, I did similar in different games with noob friendlier editors. All the models, houses, shacks etc on your map are a perfect fit and enough to fill a whole map, it just needs a more realistic terrain and textures and it would be perfect!

    Keep up the good work!

What's with the editor that's holding you back? If you have the terrains, your map on the video looks doable almost with just vanilla assets. And all the buildings on my map are free to use and edit.

to be fair, the last time i tried was about 2 years ago. I couldn´t find any useful tutorials on how to use the editor (both old and new editor). But the main thing was that I was not able to properly setup all the map files to get working. There were only outdated tutorials and after some trial and error I left it. So maybe there are better tutorials now, I will have to check that out..

Fine tuned the area triggered "motion light" that was cut from the release. It uses Nadeox1's modified lua code. Asked permission to use it some time ago, no answer yet. I think it's pretty basic stuff for those who went to lua school, but I couldn't have done it without the code template.

    Light goes on

Traffic update, new link in the first post.
Added some small stuff, like these approach lights for the strip (hidden by default, use F11 editor to unhide).
