Engine start for a newbie

Hi,
I am total newbie in this sim. I have assigned controls of my wheel to all necessary functions including engine start. But when I go to freeroam with one of the cars the engine is off. When I push the button assigned to engine start I only hear the click but nothing happens. Not even if I keep this button pushed. Tried with clutch, without clutch, with gear on neutral, with 1st gear engaged on h-shifter. Can you please let me know how to start the engine?
I have zero addons installed.

First, switch the manual gearbox to arcade gearbox mode.
Second, make sure you have this option selected. It is located in Options -> Gameplay
