Mostly it's safe, sometimes they might have some sort of beamng.memeware which messes with your thumbnails, description, etc. I've heard of a mod that changes every single car's thumbnail to a prius with eyes, extremely cursed. Must have been with a prius mod. Considering how mods work, it could replace any car's description, thumbnails and more to anything the author chooses. Malware just will not work since beamng doesn't open EXE files in a ZIP archive. example of beamng.memeware

In general: No, it is far from save. There are many potential risks involved in downloading or surfing on this site.

It does not matter how experienced you are or if you have norton or mcafee (god bless) as it can cause small problems, be very poorly optimized or is just stolen content and you can make yourself criminal with that, if you share it with a friend and such.

The Beam NG Repository and this site here however offer a variety of high quality mods with version history and discussion space and a frequently used review system to know what you are getting into!

 

Poor optimization and stolen content does not mean it's unsafe.
As far as i know, distributing files legally available for free is not illegal.

While modland isnt the safest place to get mods, i have never known anyone who got a virus from modland, but as other people have said the mods there are awful, the only use i have found for some of the older mods ive obtained through other ways is modding practice/problem solving, most of the old ones are littered with problems and fixing them would give you an idea on how the basic texturing and jbeaming works, as long as you check they are not leaked or reuploads, but thats pretty much the only use from my experience.
I still wouldn’t recommend using it though.

Well, I mostly download mods from modland and never got a virus. Although I never heard of "Crashmashine" or "John Der33" So i'm lucky (Maybe). I also see if the mods is good or it's just some old car mod from the BeamNG site that has meshlaps or something. Anyway, thanks for letting us be aware!

ive used modland before and it is relatively safe but the mods are assssssss

 

Either:
- Bad
- Stolen
- Virus
1 and 2 seem to be the most common, but with 3 also not rare.

 

i havent heard a single case of anybody getting a virus from modland, there has been child nsfw material but thats basically it

 

i've encountered one virus. usually, i read through the comments before downloading the chosen mod, just to be safe.
