I'm aware that all the cars in this game are "made for game" and not supposed to be too closely related to one specific car, but the Grand marshall stands out as incredibly similar to a crown vic, both in era, design, and mechanics.
therefore, it is much easier to look at a crown vic limo and think "hm, this would fit well onto the grand marshall"

    It isn't only crown vic.

    It could be too:

    Buick Grand Marquis
    Ford Crown Vic

I think that we could suggest some other things too and new variety, like said by Agent_Y

Btw, i agree what you say

it's about 50/50 caprice/crown vic, so taking equal inspiration from ford and GM is perfectly reasonable.

I've always thought the Grand Marshal was more of a Mercury Grand Marquis with some elements of Ford Crown Victoria and Buick Roadmaster thrown in rather than mostly being a Crown Victoria/Caprice mix.

Here's a comparison between the Grand Marshal and the Grand Marquis:
    5mbker.jpg 5mbkix.jpg
Aside from having very similar styling the name "Grand Marshal" is almost the same as "Grand Marquis".

That's not to say it has nothing in common with the other cars, which I think it does but less pronounced. Here are the other cars mentioned:
    Buick Roadmaster
    5mbmtm.jpg
    Ford Crown Victoria
    5mblb2.jpg
    Chevy Caprice
    5mbl19.jpg
I think the Grand Marshal's grille bears more resemblance to the Roadmaster's while the headlights are closer to the Caprice's than the Grand Marquis' are and I think the side window profile of the Crown Victoria matches the Grand Marshal's side windows better as well.

All in all I think the Grand Marshal is essentially a Grand Marquis with Crown Victoria side windows and a front fascia that is a mix of Roadmaster and Caprice. That would make the Grand Marshal in typical BeamNG fashion a mix of all four, but predominately Grand Marquis.

I also made a few edits to show what a black grill would look like on other 90s cars the gm is based off.

The fact that Burnside officially retired in 1985 is a piece of info which belongs to the early planned lore, ca. 2014.
Burnside could very well be continuing to produce luxury versions of Gavril models. The Grand Marshal is a great example for filling the Full-Size BOF Luxury Sedan niche with a Burnside model, as is the Roamer for filling the niche of the Full-Size Luxury SUV craze of the late 90s!

The existing Grand Marshal chassis makes a ton of sense for making a previous generation of the car (the generation we know and love is from 1990-1997 and it hasn't received a facelift yet) because the niche of the 80s landyacht featuring angles, chrome, wire hubcaps, a hood ornament, a Landau vinyl top with Opera Lights, plastic wood, white driving lamps on the profile sides, horizontal gauges/digital gauges and leather seats with buttons (plus the early versions of the modern 4.5/5.5 SOHC and 6.9 OHV Gavril V8s, with the Early ECU/Intake parts, or some early-pollution-control-equipment strangled versions of the classic Gavril 291, 353 and 423 OHV V8s - either way, always combined with the 4-Speed Automatic) isn't yet represented in the BeamNG lore!
Besides, the '90 Towncar used the same basic technology as the previous '81 generation, only with improvements!

Also, based on that same Grand Marshal chassis, a 2-door Coupe body can exist too (possibly with Opera Windows and Opera Lights, if we're talking about the said "previous" generation), for making NinetyNine feel happy about his Grand Marshal Coupe creation and because it expands the variety of available parts for the Grand Marshal platform! ;)

Canon is canon, unless it is officially retconned by a dev team member. We can't just discard old information because we feel like it.

With that said, I feel the same way - I think Burnside should have lasted until the mid-2000s. Mid-level brands like Mercury, Buick, Plymouth, and Pontiac weathered the eighties just fine. Even Oldsmobile saw great success in the eighties, until sales started to sour in the late nineties. There was a lot of appetite in the U.S. market for mid-level luxury cars at the time. Heavy use of badge engineering during that time spelled the beginning of the end for most of them, but they did soldier on for a while.

The only major marques (excluding boutique brands like Delorean, the revived Stutz, etc.) that I could find that ended in the 1980s were AMC,, International-Harvester (at least the light-truck division), and Ford's short-lived Merkur experiment. Each one had its own reasons independent of the market for shutting down, including aggressive corporate restructurings at the hands of a new and reckless CEO, an assassination in France, and a complete buyout. Of the three, only Merkur tried to position itself as a premium offering, and the key reason for its demise was that they were European Fords imported at a very unfavorable exchange rate.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense that Burnside would go under in 1985 and apparently leave Gavril without a mid-tier marque (the early sixties, when DeSoto and Studebaker shut down, seem more likely). I do think that the dev team should either revisit the decision, or provide another marque under the Gavril umbrella to occupy that space.

I remember reading the retirement fact in the same page as those cars that were initially proposed but never came to be (or were put in the freezer, depending on the car). I could be wrong on that one though. Anyway.

It makes sense for Burnside to have continued until the mid-00s because the Grand Marshal and the Roamer were some very popular cars back in the day, so satisfying the appetite for these two cars was very profitable for Burnside.
Plus, as you said, the appetite for slightly upmarket luxury versions was going strong from the early 80s and on, so the 1985 retirement makes no sense.

The Merkur brand made no sense from a fiscal standpoint, especially since BMWs and Mercs already had a better Premium reputation. Moreover, the Ford Sierra, on which the Merkur XR4Ti was based, wasn't even Premium to begin with. Quite the contrary; it was one of the most common vehicles in the mid-80s to mid-90s Europe, with the UK mostly using it as a company car. And the reason for its popularity was that it was also used as a Touring Car and a Rally Car/Hillclimb Car, with great success.
So it could definitely be compared to the 3-Series and the 190 on the Motorsports front, but no comparison could hold any water on the Premium one.

Revisiting the retirement decision seems like the most logical conclusion because the brand has a lot of unused potential (the Grand Marshal and Roamer luxury versions, the proposed early-70s Full-Size Luxury 2-door Coupe named the Bacchus etc.).
