1 - You don't need the tablet menu, actually I never use it and I completely deleted all apps because I wouldn't use them.

2 - Download classic shell and enjoy your start menu in win 8.1 :D

Windows 7 for now, will likely skip 8 as it needs literally modded to be usable :|

At least the task manager is nice..

I wouldn't say modded... Yes you have to download a 2mb program to have the old start menu, but in my case I didn't need printer drivers because win 8.1 already had them, or bluetooth drivers, or usb 3.0 drivers, + uses less resources, easily 500mb RAM less at any moment.

True it has its advantages but the disadvantages out weigh them for me, setting up the default programs everytime I really format is a real pain and worst of all, all of the metro UI windows that you need to use the change system settings. I had a really bad experience trying to boot in safe mode on a laptop with Windows 8, it required 3 reboots and a few Google searches..

You can completely ignore the metro UI.

What is the deal with strart menus? Most Linux distributions i have run over time had something like that, but i never got to use it, because there is too many ways how to do stuff that start menu does way faster, and i don't get what is all the fuzz about win8 not havin the glorius start menu about. People tend to be strnge :/

You dont need to touch the Metro UI windows to change system settings, actually you get reduced options from them. Windows key + x, then hit P, bam you have control panel up with a quick 2 step key combo.
    Safe mode, http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way

Setting up default programs, that isnt a windows 8 problem....

I use crunchbang at the moment, OpenBox, no start menus there. I don't get the fuss, it was a slow and crude way to do anything.

    Windows 8.1.

Functionality over form, it might not be the prettiest but it's fast and supports games, all I need really.

You could also hit windows key and type in windows 7, and by slow I meant it takes longer to actually open the stupid screen.

That's the problem, I hate third party OS mods. The only thing keeping me from going back to 7 is windows 8 really is faster.

search itself is faster though in 8, used to take forever to search in 7 regardless of whether I had file indexing on or off (I left it on as theoretically it was meant to improve search performance). Same machine upgraded to windows 8, file search times dropped from 2 minutes+ to instantaneous.

Pretty much everything is faster in 8, except for the start screen actually loading.

Well, it has a fade in animation and thats it. Would be nice if that could be turned off. Otherwise, I can mash that start key as much as I like and it seems more than capable of keeping up with me. I'd say its fast enough. You can also start typing the search during the fade and it works just fine.

I like windows, It is the Essential OS. but also countless linux's because of the things they can do.

Some large industry needs too pay apple to fuck off.
