Re: General discussion chat we owned a 1999 ford explorer (dark green), I grew up with it, the new ford explorer just ruined that name "explorer" the only exploring that thing is gonna do is drive on the occasional gravel roads at soccer practice :I
Re: General discussion chat Hope everything ends well. I guess it goes without saying that if you know any areas where they like to go that they are probably worth checking. You may want to consider having a chat with them when they are found, see if there is anything you can do to help or if they think there are any other factors that you may be unaware of. Its amazing how much people can hide personal issues, Sometimes people who often seem happy to feel pretty crap about themselves when not around others.
Re: General discussion chat The quantity is hugely exaggerated. My commute to uni has a whopping 1, 35 mile trip and there is 1 camera right where I hit all the traffic anyway so couldnt speed, plus its angled at the oncoming lane and I take a different route out of northampton so dont go past it on the way back. In my town. There are 2 camera spots. 1 is actually not a speed camera but detects people running the red light on what used to be a junction with a high accident rate. The other is a road without any pedestrians around it. As for nobody driving fast enough to kill anyone. My old neighbour spent 2 months on life support before her family chose to switch the machine off, hit at 50mph in a 30 zone. In response to that, the speed limit for that road was reduced to 20mph and the pedestrian crossings had sort of a raised road/speed bump thing going on infront of them, try and hit those at 50 and your fucking your car up. 3 school students were hit in one go last year, single vehicle wiped all 3 out, 1 I believe has been paralysed. Brothers friend just a week ago was hit by a car. All of these, actual pedestrian crossings. I have also been hit by cars on 3 occasions, walked it off each time thankfully.
Re: General discussion chat Someone that is slightly strange and under the influence of something could easily do that. Even if they're just under the influence of something. Happens all the time. Not saying this dude's friend is strange or was drunk/high, but it's a possibility.
Re: General discussion chat Unibody vs ladder on frame isnt going to make any difference to its offroad capability, and its not like anybody offroads in their explorers (or like they are incredibly capable off road machines in the first place).
Re: General discussion chat Hmm. Maybe it's an east coast thing idk lol. There's a ton of stuff on that site from over here.
Re: General discussion chat If anything, he's more likely to be killed while crossing the road at a light controlled crossing while it is his turn to cross.
Re: General discussion chat it's not so much that, it's just it's strayed from it's roots too far. It was originally a body on frame SUV with some offroad capability. Now it's pretty much just a big sedan. It may have nearly the same offroad capability, but it just ain't the same.
Re: General discussion chat That's because there is a pretty high chance they wont stop There was a craze type thing that happened around my area when i was much younger where people would run onto roads in front of cars, lie down, then get up and run back off the road. My schoolbus driver at the time was an incredibly nervous driver, they freaked the hell out when it happened. But people stopped doing it at some point, i think someone got ran over but it was too long ago for me to be sure. About speeding in the UK. I live on a housing estate and everyday there was a car that would travel down our road at around 60mph (30 limit), the car always attracted attention at our bus stop since they went ridiculously fast. After a month or two of that car going past everyday a child was ran over and killed by that same speeding car. Now the road has been narrowed by placing bollards in the center periodically with hashed lines in between and occasionally there is a police van parked up with cameras pointing out of it to check speeds. So to be honest i see the point of the cameras. They have a purpose and i imagine if there was a speed camera fitted on our road then a death wouldn't have occurred. Never seen the car since.
Re: General discussion chat I hate speed cameras. So. Much. I pray to god that we never get any of that bullshit over here. Yeah the car was speeding and it shouldn't have been going that fast, but I'm sure what happened was the kid ran out in front of the car. Not blaming the kid, but it takes 2 to tango. - - - Updated - - - That doesn't really show much. With a little bit of effort you could get an accord up on there.
Re: General discussion chat If the kid ran out 50 or so metres in front of the car, if the car was doing 30, they would be able to either stop or hit the child at a much lower speed. If they were doing 60 in the same scenario, the car would hit the child at a much higher speed and likely kill them. I don't care what you think of speed cameras, they save lives and are for everyone's good. Just because you can't "hoon" around or because it's costly to get caught doesn't mean they're bad, get over yourself.
Re: General discussion chat that really isnt impressive at all. Look at me, got a little dirt on me while placing my front wheel less than half a wheel diameter higher than the back wheel. Got a little muddy did you, well in england this is how we do mud: I bring up mud because I hear people referring to how they got their trucks nice and muddy all the time when all they did was splash through a bit that isnt even as deep as the profile of their tyre.
Re: General discussion chat You just reminded me of this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4087850.stm
Re: General discussion chat I have a bit of common sense, ya know. It's stupid to go flying through a city at double the speed limit with people and children on the side of the road. I don't support that, and the idiot that killed the kid shouldn't have a license. I just don't like the idea of cameras sitting around giving you an automatic ticket if you're speeding. No one here wants them. They installed a few in a school zone somewhere around her (not a bad idea you shouldn't speed in a school zone), and they've already had to turn one off. The public hates them. I wouldn't mind them much in congested areas and school zones in stuff, but on highways and backroads: no thx
Re: General discussion chat On highways and backroads, the speed limits are still for your own safety. If you're the kind of person a speed camera would catch then you deserve the ticket 100%, whether people want the cameras or not that doesn't make them less necessary.
Re: General discussion chat The government puts speed cameras on the dash of large prime movers in Australia, We have them on ever toll road, Almost every large street. They do save lives, So I see your argument invalid.
Re: General discussion chat That's exactly the point. I don't give a shit about my own safety. I don't, however, support putting other people in danger. A little bit of speeding around backroads every now and then, or driving 5 above the limit on the highway isn't gonna hurt anyone.
