So I really hate to derail everyone from the (very) constructive argument that we have here but may I propose a change of topic?

On the topic of paid mods, lets discuss and examine a situation unfolding right now on a paid mod (which I will leave as nameless as to avoid thread spillover)

This paid mod is well known on the community, made by a competent mod maker who had made a vehicle mod beforehand, and this is their first paid mod. It is good quality and has no major issues.

The problem then lies in the maintenance, there has been no word from the creator after accumulating $3000 in profits from the mod (this might actually be in euros instead, I am not entirely sure, however there was a decent profit made). With the way the mod was developed, there is fear that the mod may break soon with future updates. As the creator has been MIA for the past few months, no one has any idea whether an update is in the works, or if the mod is in danger of breaking.

The uncertainty around the fate of this mod leaves me to pose this question to everyone in attendance to this thread:

Is it ok to post a fix for a paid mod if it has been abandoned (both Morally Allowable and Forum Rules Abiding), and what classifies a project as 'abandoned'?
Please explain your reasoning if you are going to reply, to allow for constructive conversations pertaining to community policy on paid mods.

    Thanks,
    -car

The fix doesn't need to include the whole mod; it could only contain the jbeam and texture files that need fixing. That way the mod is not leaked, only some files which won't work on their own. Jbeam files are hard to steal after all, it would need so much adaptation to work on another mod that it wouldn't be worth it.

I swear you're so annoying dude. Ai' is one of the Vehicle Developers. What he's saying is true and what Chuck said is also true to the same level. You're getting ridiculous. Stop it.

I'm not entirely sure, that might be a requirement on Gumroad/KoFi possibly but I would have to check the end user agreements posted there to verify it.

Individual creators might also post their own quality promises so who knows
Yeah this could probably work best in that scenario, since it can prevent mod leaking, but it could promote ethical concerns on whether or not the fixer is entitled to financial compensation as well

One thing I have noticed when it comes to paid mods is that there has been a sharp increase in the amount being uploaded to the forums in a very short space of time. I am a little concerned that this is the start of some sort of precedent for the future where most modders go down the paid route.

Those who have been on here for a while will remember some insane BeamNG mods that were completely free to use (FAR too many to list here). Had paid mods been a part of the forums since the beginning, I wouldn't really have a problem, but what I want to know is - what suddenly changed?

The paid mods debate is plagued with toxicity from both sides to be honest. Both from screeching kids who can barely string a sentence together and expect a dev quality mod with 100 configs for free, and forum white knights who will kiss the feet of mod makers and pile on the righteous band wagon. The latter remind me of Twitter users.

There's no denying that paid mods are here to stay. Ultimately it's up to the mod maker him/herself to decide, but I think a balance could be made, whether it being an early access type solution, limited configs in a free version or where the mod goes free after a certain period of time (e.g. 8 months).

I think there are solutions to this that will satisfy most people.

It's pretty simple: Lucas started the bandwagon with the Picnic, and other modders such as LJ74, seeing it was working, decided to make paid mods too. But really there are only, what 4 paid mods other than the picnic ? It's not that much, especially considering free cars that have been released on the repo meanwhile (FPS trapez, ETK C-series, Ibishu Claria, KLJP, Vertex rework, Maluch remastered, and many more).

Im just waiting for the moment when paid updating becomes mainstream, not far off now with subscription based patreon mods, but still not adopted by (more) respectable modders.

I'm closing this thread because it's becoming toxic.

There's now THREE developers confirming our stance on the publishing of paid mods on this forum. If a Community Coordinator, a Vehicle Developer, and a Communications Lead is not enough weight for you - feel free to leave the forum entirely.
