    Patina system

I think you guys should include a patina feature in the game, where you can edit the wear and tear on your car, to the point of compromising structural integrity, so I could add as many cancer spots and paint scuffs on any given car as I like. Also, you could include a feature where you could introduce minor or major problems on any part inside the vehicle, making it behave differently. Because, really, this is a sim, and I would love to make my very own rust bucket to thrash.

    You mean rust?

There's been a talk about this already. If you search "rust" you get a few threads.

Anyway, I have an idea for the "dirtiness", also water will work, and rust. Oh and also you could make the car look old by decreasing the specular of the paint too.
Basically, have these layers: paint-rust-dirt-water in that order.
You can already change the colour of the car by changing the paint texture, so imagine you get rust: you overlay the paint layer with a rust texture (quite fade at first) in some parts of the car.
Do the same for dirt: splash some mud, now there is a texture representation of it, getting water on that spot washes it away.
Water droplets being the same texture-idea-thing, you can have wipers like this and rain.
I'm quite sure this is how other games create scratches on the cars, although not as in depth as this, similar concept.

So, say a car gets old or has the "old look", it would have rust in places and a low specular on the paint.

I think it's quite simple to change the specular, it's a little harder to make the layering.

If we can overcome the big hurdle of dynamically vertex blending a texture layer, we can do all kinds of stuff - dynamic dirt, rust, etc.

The way materials in T3D work, you just cover up the shiny stuff with non-shiny stuff. So you'd just make a material layer on top with 0 specular and a rusty texture with the appropriate alpha to make it show up in the right places.

And it'd be fairly simple Lua stuff to simulate weakening of the structure due to rust.

weakening of the structure due to rust. Like removeing beams.

Hey Gabe, is it possible for now to realize train wheels? you know, make it without actual rubber tire and without pressure, just make dual steel based wheel

Maybe more like decreasing strength and making it crack instead of bend.

The rubber tires and rims are just B/Ns, just make a wheel without a "layer" of "tire" and you have the rim, which is pretty much a train wheel. I think that is a yes.

No idea why the quote is slicing into two, but it's annoying.
I know that's how to do it, but I don't know how. I guess it's a lot of work.
I don't know much about T3D either, is it possible to generate dynamic textures/change them? Like change the specular or color while playing the game?

I really don't know how that would work. When changing vehicles all the time. Let's say you get Gavril Barstow for example, and you drive it around, drive through the water, hit a few trees, scratch against the wall, etc, then you change vehicles or rest that car, all the wear and tear would be removed off the car from the change or reset. If you do, it might hard when it comes to layering.

But dispint all that I think it might work. But hey that's something I didn't think of, great ideal!

Are you also talking about like paint wear too? Like when you drive against the wall, the paint will scratch off?

Some ideas I have are adding in mod support like in Minecraft, a hud possibly, and maybe, just maybe; teaming up with ovee and getting some of their ground deformation tech to really kick this game up a notch!:p
