I've noticed for a while that repository mods are always fictional brands, and when a real car brand appears in the forums, its usually taken down the next day. I thought it was because of legal issues, but automation has a ton of real car brands, anybody know why this is?

it must be because the vast majority are poorly made or because they are not perfect like the ones on the forums

of course there are ultra good and bad ones, maybe because they are automation and there is something in it that is allowed, an example is the leutwagen gaia that even has a steering wheel that moves

Perhaps it's about how picture perfect the cars are to the real thing, so when a car does not resemble the real thing 1:1 but has the real badge it's okay, and when it does resemble the real thing 1:1 but has a fictional badge like the Prasu then it's also okay.

Basically copyright law is idiotic and should've been long gone by now.

Real car mods are allowed. Most of the time if they're removed then either : A) the author asked for the thread to be removed, B) the tread stirred too much drama and moderators removed the thread to avoid it.

Most of the time the latter case is caused by people reusing 3D models without permission from their original author, or the mod simply being extremely low-quality. The forums have multiple examples of real car mods available on the forums. Just look here for more than 5 minutes.

NOBODY HERE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT COPYRIGHT IT SEEMS... PLEASE STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION GUYS AND DON'T ANSWER IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER YOURSELF.

It all comes down to who is the legal author of the mod. The repository, forum and Automation section all have different rules.
Everything uploaded on the repository becomes the legal property of BeamNG as the company. Meaning that if something copyrighted ends up there they hold the full legal responsibility for it. That is why they don't approve any real life brands or other copyrighted content, it can result in a costly lawsuit for them in the worst case. This also ties down to the use of third party assets in mods. On the repository only certain licensed content is allowed (basically copyright free assets), and everything made by someone other than the person uploading the mod needs proof of direct permission from the author. So to sum it up the repository doesn't allow real life brands and the mod can be taken down if either of these happens:
    • Copyrighted material is discovered inside the files of the mod.
    • It is proven that the mod contains assets made by someone else without direct permission.
    • The author requests the devs to remove his mod, this is a rare case.
    • Something illegal or against the repo rules is discovered in the mod files, it usually gets taken down super fast then.
    • The devs might also randomly decide to delete the mod without explanation which is allowed since it's their legal property. Extremely rare, as far as I know it only happened once.
Now to the forum mods, the situation is vastly different here as the person uploading the mod is the legal author, so they hold full responsibility for any copyrighted content or real brands. The reasons for a mod to be taken down are much different here, most commonly these:

    • The author might randomly decide to delete it because it's not good enough or because of petty drama or for any other reason, they are obviously allowed to do this.
    • The forum moderation discovers assets taken without permission or otherwise breaking the forum rules or straight up illegal stuff, usually gets deleted before the mod is even publically available, but some people only upload finished mods and it gets taken down pretty fast then.
    • The author receives a copyright complaint and is forced to take down the mod, not as common but still happens, especially with real life cars.

When it comes to Automation mods, the situation is way more complex. The legal owner of those mods is Camshaft Software but due to the license used they are allowed to be published on the repository. It's practically impossible to determine who should be held responsible in case of copyright because it's not just the person who built the mod and BeamNG, but also Camshaft Software and all of the Automation modders who made the mods used in the mod. On top of that the sheer quantity of Automation mod makes them impossible to moderate. So they just allow everything and will only worry if a lawsuit actually happens which I don't think it ever did.
