I've always had a strange affinity for Soviet-era vehicles. Every aspect of their history fascinates me - from the ruggedness and simplicity necessitated by their climate and geography to the ways politics touched every aspect of their existence from blueprint to production to individual procurement. From the legend of the "Black Volga" to the authoritative image of the powerful GAZ-24-24, some portion of Soviet automotive culture can always be traced back to the usage of the automobile as a symbol of power in times of strife - this part of history is not a positive one, but nonetheless makes for a fascinating alternate-history background for a vehicle.

The Mikhailov MI-1, produced by a fictional famous warplane design bureau Mikhailov, was not designed for the masses. Built specifically to curry political favor, the MI-1 spared no expense in search of advancement regardless of its origin. From incredibly complex sculpted bodywork to an advanced 4x4 system tucked high into the body, the MI-1 embodied all the patriotic excess expected of a successful (and politically favored) engineer's pet project.

Determined to impress the politburo, Mikhailov bureau founder Andrey Mikhailov retained 3 pre-production examples of the MI-1 and in 1950 used them to circumnavigate Russia. The journey was a resounding success - the relatively smooth undercarriage, powerful engine, robust 4x4, and perfectionist handmade assembly allowed all three to circle the entire country in under 2 months. One of these was discovered in a barn near Moscow in 1998, still wearing its expeditionary paint scheme, and completed a full restoration by 2010. Though it doesn't appear to be Mikhailov's personal expeditionary vehicle, it is nonetheless a remarkable piece of history.

Following this journey, Mikhailov gifted all other known examples to Soviet notables - mostly politburo members. These were largely kept in personal garages, as being chauffeured from the rear seat of a 4 seat vehicle was the norm for the time, and as a result 11 MI-1's are known to still exist in various states of repair.

    Technical notes:

Undercarriage protrusions are minimized by two primary methods: The drivetrain sits high in the car (similarly to the HMMWV), and the exhaust is a specialized muffled loop emerging at the rear of the hood. While these aspects provide for a relatively cramped interior and a slightly louder-than-contemporary exhaust note, they allow the MI-1 to ride lower than subsequent designs while maintaining offroad ability. It is possible to "slide" the undercarriage over many obstacles in the MI-1 (similarly to the VW Beetle), with the solid front and rear axles being the primary obstruction. The drivetrain height is also why the passenger compartment features a noticeable "bulge" in the sides between the front and rear fenders - extra width was required for passenger comfort.

Most examples of the MI-1 were painted gloss black. The expeditionary vehicles, however, were painted in wartime camouflage with "MIKHAILOV" script written on various portions of the car.

The MI-1 uses a 3-speed (gears 2 and 3 synchronized) manual transmission, a full-time 4wd center differential transfer case, and limited slip axle differentials.

The MI-1 is of similar horizontal dimensions to the existing GAZ M-20 'Pobeda' though shorter vertically.

The engine is probably set back quite a bit in the engine compartment, potentially enough to be considered front-mid engined.

The passenger compartment glass is composed entirely of flat pieces in reference to famous fictional Mikhailov combat aircraft. The sides of the passenger compartment have a distinctive "drop" to them relative to the front windshield and rear glass. This is also a reference to fighter plane cockpit design, and would probably have benefitted side visibility in the MI-1. Look at the early BF109 as an example of what I mean - the cockpit is made of flat glass and hugs around the top sides of the fuselage.

The instrument panel is basically a fighter plane instrument panel.

    Final notes:

It might be cool if it somehow featured portal axles. Coil sprung suspension would be neat as well, given the experimental nature of the design.

I'll try to add things as I think of them. The story doesn't necessarily have to be the story written for the car in BeamNG of course, it just seemed like a fitting tale for such a unique design. Thanks for reading!

It is a Japanese mid-size 5-door SUV based on the Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota 4Runner, but with a more angular design similar to the Jeep Commander. It has a front-engine rear-wheel-drive/four-wheel-drive layout and body-on-frame construction. It uses a 3.5 liter V6, a 4.7 liter V8, and a 5-speed automatic. It would have a few factory configs, as well as a police config and a custom off-road config.
    Why?
    - There are no mid-size SUVs
    - There are no 2000s cars
