Why do shadows being turned on decrease the GPU Utilization from 99% to 70%, loss of approx. 50 FPS?

    Hi all,

    A few months ago I wrote a post on the Beam.NG subreddit complaining performance issues I was having with Beam.NG. Unfortunately we couldn't figure out what was going on.

    I would always end up with my GPU being utilised around 70% and with 40-50 FPS in demanding maps.

    Today I turned off the shadows and I get stable 95 FPS (locked) and my GPU is at 99% utilisation, just like in all other games. The GPU clock overs around 2200mhz instead of 1600mhz with partial shadows.

    I don't get what's causing this - I don't think the issue is with the shadows, it's simply to do with the fact that the shadows end up making the GPU not being fully utilised.

    Is this a known bug? And if so is there a solution?

    i think your cpu is the bottleneck. it certainly is for me. my cpu gets pinned at 100 far before my gpu does. very cpu intensive game.

    It's a issue with AMD GPUs AFAIK, try using the Vulcan renderer (it's unstable, but it usually uses 100% of the GPu and fixes this issue)

    This solved it, now enjoying 95 fps at 1440p ultrawide. Thanks so much.

    I hope they move to Vulkan soon...
