Hey guys, I know that there are specific tutorials out there on specific things. But my question is, what is the best way to start modding? Are maps easier to create? Or are cars easier? I basically want to learn how to mod, and how to use the tools that are needed for modding (for example, blender). I don't have any experience but I do have some programming knowledge and basic knowledge on graphic design software (like illustrator and photoshop). I of course played around extensively with the world editor and with creating cars in automation. My ultimate goal is to create a map and a car from scratch. A sketchy mountain pass, and an SUV based on the Nissan Xterra. I know that this will take a long time, but I enjoy learning and I think that having this final goal will keep me motivaded. Any thoughts on logical steps to begin this journey? Thanks in advance
I don't think it's possible to tell if making maps or cars is harder, both are really difficult in their own ways. Blender is absolutely necessary for both, there are lots of tutorials online on how to use it, after you know the basics you can just google any of the more advanced things you need to use and it will be described well. As you have some experience with World Editor I would start with a map, Automation experience means nothing as making a real mod has almost nothing in common with it.
personal tip: as a first mod and to learn how blender and the beamng/blender enviroments works, make a very simple widebody, custom hood... you will learn the very basics and it requires little skill
Personally, I find maps easier. You can get away with making one from copying a vanilla one rather than from scratch. There are some useful tools and tutorials around. Check out a poster here called AlexKidd. My simple map tutorial below:
https://www.beamng.com/threads/beamng-tool-for-map-creators-big-update.89058/ It's worth using this to get a head start. --- Post updated --- I mean the rename map function. Basically makes a copy of another map without you having to change all the jsons.
