Hoila Laitlan! I made this Post to find out how many People we are here and to ask a few Questions: Can you Guys still speak properly or are you already speaking German? Do you use the "Österreichisches Deutsch" Translation (a stupid, wrong Name!), if not, why not? Would you generally like to have more Games Interfaces in our Native Language(s)? Servus!
Solbei What an unexpected thread to see on the forums! I live in Meran, Südtirol... 1. Even if we had to speak proper German at school, I only speak the Southtyrolean dialect everyday, except if I have to talk to German tourists. But even then my brain starts to mimic the German dialects like Bavarian or Ruhrpott-ish language. So no real "Hochdeutsch" is involved at all. 2. The more rural the people are that I talk to, the rougher my dialect gets, but it always stays Southtyrolean 3. I think it would be so weird to have game UI in dialect languages, but it could be funny as heck, actually. It would also be quite hard to do, because there aren't that many specific rules for grammar and also the dialects vary even from town to town or from valley to valley, so you would need to find some happy medium from all the different places. Personally I don't even use German as language in games, I always stay with English, because some games have poor translations that don't fit that well.
Hoila again. Same here. At school its just annoying speaking German with the Teachers. I like certain Subjects where you can speak in your Motherlanguage. (Sport) Also depends to which School you go. When i, or i guess most of us, speak to Tourists we sound really weird as if German is a foreign Language to us, which technically it is. Mine always stays the same. I read we speak the Dialect of South Tyrolean/Tyrolean/Bairisch (depends how you want to define this Language) which is closest to Oldbavarian/Olduppergerman. I did never knew this and tought we speak not such a rough Dialect of Tyrolean. lol First i wanted to call my new Translation Bavarian but i noticed People just talk a bit too differently for them to comfortably and effortlessly read my Dialect. Image they are from North Bavaria or East Austria, this would not work too good. (i tested this in a Discord Channel already) Now i will call it "Sidtiroularisch", the relevant People will understand this and not want the name changed. I decided against calling it Tiroularisch because this always implies something is about North- and East Tyrol...I also wont call it the Dialect of my Valley (like Vintschgarisch or Puschtrarisch) because i dont want to favour a Dialect and imply anything. But i am still not 100% sure. Its not really hard to do: We all speak and write in just the same System which is the same all over South Tyrol and Tyrol. I have read and spoken to many People from all over South Tyrol and the differences are of course there but really small, we are a small Land. If i would instead make a Translation and call it Southbavarian which includes Carinthia and more of Austria, that would work not so good. lol The Sentence "Tiroul isch lai oans" really applies to many things unironically and even here. xD Now in pronunciation the differences are a bit bigger but in Script they disappear somewhat. I could make them visible with diacritical marks (å and many more) but barely anyone outside Academics uses them, wants them or is willing to learn how to pronounce them (other than äöü). If there are tiny differences like sem instead of semm or zemm, it wont matter to 99% of People. Its a nobrainer to not use dert in this Translation because its nearly German and...simply because i never heard or used it in my Valley. Vintschga understand "sem", right? Which Games have poor Translations? I did not notice this yet in any of my Games but i only use German in AAA Games, because most Indiegames only have English. (but their German is imo always correct)
