what is your favorite OS? VOTE! I know there is other threads like this, but the lists are very limited. (If your favorite OS isn't on the list just reply with the name)
I chose a lot of Windows, except 2000/ME, and Vista and NT, and like Crunchbang and Linux Mint and Ubuntu. You forgot stresslinux and EasyPeasy though.
i chose 8/8.1, 7, XP/XP Pro 64-bit, 2000,95, 95, 3.11 for workgroups, ubuntu (before it went to shit), and OSX Lion, MLion, and mavericks (haven't tried yosemite yet) would have chosen vista, as i did like the OS, but it was just to unoptimized to be good (at least in my virtual machine, my first laptop ran vista, and it never had a problem with optimization but IDK i guess) also IMHO Windows 10 shouldn't be an option yet, as it's an early PREVIEW (not even an alpha yet) so LOTS of things can still change before final release
I use OS X 10.9 for development at work. I've also used Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I use OS X 10.10 for development and music production at home. I've also tried Dream Studio (an Ubuntu distro) and Windows 7 (briefly). I use Windows 8.1 for development and games at home (I've started working on things that require Visual Studio ...). Back in school, I worked on CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu. I like OS X because of the smoothness of the trackpad shortcuts, Unix base (helps with terminal navigation), and choice of media production software. I have Windows because without it, I wouldn't be here ... gotta play games! I really like the customizability of Linux, but some things are just too much of a pain to get rolling, and it didn't make a good everyday OS for me. Back in high school, I was just a Windows guy, but I've gotten to the point where I actually prefer OS X for day to day use ... hate me if you want, but it really just comes down to preference. Gamers will want their Windows. Most developers and media creators I know work on OS X nowadays. It's all about how the OS aligns with your needs.
Windows 7: Where do I start? Its the only good thing to have come out of Microsoft... Windows XP: Except for this timeless classic. Still regularly use XP. So light and fast. OS X 10.5: Second best version of OS X. Light, fast, instantly recognizable. OS X 10.6: Best version of OS X. Light, even faster than 10.5. I miss running it on my MacBook. OS X 10.9: Relieved us of the Lion/Mountain Lion fiasco. Brought OS X back to the Mac. Would have put Porteus down as well. It's a really nice and light Linux distro, good for booting off of flash drives and fixing broken (let's face it, it'll still be broken) Windows installations with.
You forgot: Solaris OpenBSD NetBSD FreeBSD PC-BSD Oracle Linux NEXTSTEP OPENSTEP BeOS/Haiku OpenVMS DEC ULTRIX IBM OS/2 FreeDOS MS-DOS PC-DOS QDOS GLaDOS CP/M RISC OS SCO Xenix SCO UnixWare HP/UX IBM AIX Mac OS Classic/Macintosh System Software Apple LisaOS Apple II DeskTop Apple GS/OS Apple A/UX Apple ProDOS Apple DOS Apple SOS Apple iOS Apple Pie Microsoft Singularity/Midori GEOS PC-GEOS Atari TOS Xerox GlobalView Perq Operating System Apollo DOMAIN/OS AmigaOS MorphOS AROS Research UNIX Multics Ken's new system PWB/UNIX Unics Unix Unix/32V BSD SunOS Minix Damn, that's a long list
Ubuntu is my favorite. I'm still forced to use Windows because of the games I play, though. Consider Windows 7 the runner up.
In order of preference, Windows 7 > Windows Vista > Windows XP and then 98 for the sake of nostalgia. I might have even voted for windows 8 ... if display scaling hadn't blurred out the text :|
Hehe I ran Windows ME in a VM for the sake of nostalgia. All of them now removed Windows Media Player visualizers brought back so many memories :')
