Hello there Please mind the title and ignore the crude and unfinished I Series body kit in my profile I was making. Instead, let's talk about someone who has no BeamNG modding experience porting a really big map into BeamNG.drive for our driving pleasure, specifically the Isle Of Man map from rFactor 2. I have almost no idea what I'm doing so I need some help with understanding the scale of my ambitions. I'm going to voice my most prominent concerns with the expectation that I'll receive tips or guidance from those of you that have a decent understanding of what you're talking about because, again, I don't know what I'm doing. My biggest concern with this idea is performance. I want to convert this map for BeamNG but it's a 37.75km long road excluding the measurements of the outer areas, and I don't know how computers with specifications like mine (Radeon RX580, Ryzen 5 2400g, 8GB RAM, 1TB storage) will perform. I've already ported a version of the map into Blender and it lags so much that I have to wait up to an entire minute for the application to stop buffering after initiating one simple action like... selecting an object... I can't have any other apps open or else Blender crashes or my entire PC freezes. Working on the map in Blender eats up the storage on my boot drive like spraying water onto cotton candy. To be fair the entire thing consists of around 10 million polygons but this is still making what tiny progress I'm making painfully slow. I was going to go into in-game performance but besides these small bits of information I won't bother. My graphics settings are a custom low/normal configuration with dynamic reflections enabled. I average a mostly smooth 40-50fps on vanilla maps with my AMD hardware. I perform on what I believe to be the most intensive map I have, C1 Expressway, at a stuttery 30-40ish fps. I don't know how game ports typically perform compared to maps made in game but I feel that the Bathurst mod I have is unusually stuttery. I'm actually realizing that I'm saying way too much so I'm gonna cut this text short and just post it with an attachment of what I have and one final question: does anyone have any tips for me? anything helps, thanks!!
hi there! im in the same boat as you, trying to convert an rfactor2 map, though a public third party one, so i dont know if i will be permitted . needless to say i am also a beginner, i have some rally special stages to convert and maybe even make a few from scratch for fun . i'd "simplify" models if possible, it is certainly overkill for beamng with their polygon count, i mostly care about the road mesh though xD yeah definitely out of bounds surfaces need to have less polygons. we could get in touch and learn new things together . sorry if this is not the answer you were looking for
