Hey guys so im trying to make a series of maps based in Queensland, Australia. the first location I want to do is a small town called landsborough. I found LiDAR data for the entire town here ( https://elevation.fsdf.org.au ), cut out what I needed and ran it through cloud compare. I followed this tutorial to the best it was written ( https://www.beamng.com/threads/tutorial-level-building-with-lidar.39370/ ) but I got stuck once I had to import it into blender so I choose to make a height map with cloud compare and photo shop like the alternate path of the tutorial stated instead. but alas, even the height map didn't work when trying to import into the beamNG map editor. I think my issue is not having the map a perfect 2048x2048 or similar, but there's no real indication of the map size at all, from the site I take the lidar data from up to me prepping it for import. I know I can rasterize the grid in cloud compare but I don't have an X and Y in the rasterize edit grid section, only X and Z, so when I follow the tutorial, it doesn't really work as mentioned. To cut a long story short, is there any newer tutorials on LiDAR and beamNG other then the one mentioned above? Could someone make me a map template with a 2.48kmx2.48km LiDAR scan of the small town called Landsborough, located in Queensland Australia? if so could you also add the google image of the entire town as the base terrain texture? could you add a bunch of PBR terrains into the map template for me? like asphalt, concrete, dirt, grass, sand and leafy dirt and stuff? I can do the rest easy because I have been practicing in the map editor for months its just im super stuck on bringing the terrain into beamNG and making new textures from scratch. any help would be SUPER appreciated because there's not enough representation of Australia in any video game let alone beamNG so helping dumb aussies like me create high detail maps will ensure you guys get more quality aussie maps like mt-cootha and mt glorious in the repository! here's my email for sending files to: ethanlovel37@hotmail.com if you really need payment you'll have to wait 2 weeks for payday but if you make what I need from the kindness of your heart rather then money ill give you %50 map credits 0 Comments --- Post updated --- and if the absolute legend who made mt-cootha and stuff is reading this, I would love to get some tips from you because I love how the streets in your maps are visible in reflections and I want to know how you sourced and imported all those models into the game too. only because I want at least the main parts of this landsborough map to be modeled after the real thing, like the train station and the traffic islands and stuff
Try this. Maps must be a multiple of 1024x1024 e.g. 2048x2048, 4096x4096 or 8192x8192 Or it wont work, but even then there is always a terrain texture issue if you change the resolution from the map template that you use, and you will need to modify the terrain texture size boxes appropriately.
thank you, ill let you know how i go. im really serious about this project, i know i was on the forums with completely different issues but i realized making the terrain by hand in beamng didn't look so good so i took a step up and decided to do LiDAR. i have a ready to go heightmap on my desktop but when i exported it as 4096x4096, it actually saved as 4097x4097 so im trying to figure out how to remove that one digit. been reading that i need to run the heightmap in L3DT to make it a perfect 4096x4096 again but i cant find enough info online. i really wish more people where excited to make maps instead of the same audi and bmw mods that get remade by someone new every month, that way there would be an avalanche of info to reference.
Download GIMP. Open the image. Resize image to 4096x4096. Convert image to Greyscale (16 bit) Save as a PNG greyscale 16 bit (no alpha, alpha will ruin it). Then load it up in beamng. If it's steppy, which it probably will be, reopen in gimp and run a Gaussian blur at around 1.5-2. The. Save again. Then repeat as needed.
thank you so mate, it worked like a charm! i imported it into a map template that has pbr terrains and now i need to figure out how to import the google maps image into each terrain. should i use the terrain properties menu or should i add them via notepad++? the google screenshot is the exact location of the height map and is the same picture size as the height map png (4096x4096)
I just open the current base map and paste in the new one. If you change the resolution (i.e. from 2k to 4k) then you will need to change the basemap resolution values for the main terrain, and for each of the textures. For the terrain, do this in the terrain editor. It's under where the terrains are all listed. For each terrain, easiest way is to edit the materials.json file. Go into that, find the bit that says what the resolution is and change it. Sorry I can be more specific, I can't remember what the words are exactly.
thank you so much mate, everything worked just like you explained! your an absolute legend and i wish you only the best in life!
Would be awesome to take the filming locations of the legendary Mad Max chase scene with the tanker truck, make a LIDAR map and scenario to either try to escape or stop the truck...old farts like me remember that amazing flick, those stunts were absolutely incredible and the driving would be a blast to recreate with friends on a server or with AI
