New content might create a temporary buzz but making lower level and more fundamental improvements will keep BeamNG relevant as time moves on.

Sounds like a good decision by the team, good luck with the hard work.

Thank you for keeping us in the loop, and under the hood work is very appreciated. You all are doing a fantastic job, love this game so much :D
    - Any plans for updating/ or are you working to improve the shadow system ? (Would be so awesome to get rid of the bug where the shadows disappears when turning the camera to the sunny side of the cars/objects)
    - Are there any news on the anti-aliasing work being done if any?
    - And here is a big one the replay system, any plans/ news on improvement to the shaky/twitchyness of parts separated from the cars/props, and the light sources flickering on and off (I know why the parts are twitching, but would be nice to see it less in the future if possible)

Here are a few questions from me:

-Will the traffic system be reworked? Like regular traffic cars have to pull over for emergency vehicles instead of just slamming on the brakes and slightly turning?
-Will there be any improvements or fixes to ECUSA? It's seemed neglected.
-Any map improvements in general? Maybe some new resources and debug friendly UI features?

I rarely drink coffee but I'll answer a couple of these nonetheless :D
A lot of the "under the hood" work is relatively boring. It's the kind of stuff that someone has to take care of in order to make life easier for other devs and for modders, but which are nothing too interesting even for those people, let alone the general non-programmer public. It's also the kind of stuff that nobody except us devs can do, so even if there's cooler things we would prefer to do, sometimes we gotta leave those to the community while we work on the foundations (because nobody else can).

For example, last week I did some "under the hood" work, consisting deleting 6 thousand lines of code. This was a painstaking and surgical work that took numerous hours to complete. The deleted code was mostly dead remnants from the old open source engine that our current engine was originally based on a decade ago. That kind of stuff is typically called "technical debt", and it accumulates because there's not a huge direct impact on its own, so there isn't an immediate incentive to deal with it (compared to working on cool new stuff). But when you add a lot of tech debt together, the impact also adds up, and slowly becomes noticeable. This 6k+ line cleanup I worked on has resulted in zero new features, zero optimizations, zero nothing. However, this cleanup now allows some of us programmers to work more efficiently in the future, meaning what normally took 20 days to do, now might only take 19 days instead. So we not only optimize the simulator itself, we also have to optimize the development process itself. This is just one example of what can contribute to a "delay", where the update ends up being the same size as usual, maybe even smaller, despite dedicating greater resources to it.

(then there's also "under the hood" work that may directly contribute to things that the community more directly notices)

I started a small prototype of low-hanging fruit to improve that behaviour. The proper fix would be quite more elaborated, and would take a considerable amount of dev time for us, and of CPU time for users. But I was hoping I could solve a good percentage of the problematic situations in a simpler, more CPU-friendly way. However I quickly got hijacked by other more important topics, and never got a chance to test that. It's still in my backburner, but who knows when I'll have time to back to it.

The changes I made have zero direct impact on modders and users, so they shouldn't affect materials.cs (tho I don't know if other devs may have been working on that topic).

Do that and half the forum would be banned in a day.
    --- Post updated ---
Has anything been done to further optimize the game for low end pc's? Or is it almost unoptimizable at this point?

Also, any updates on Vulcan's abysmal performance drop when VRAM runs out?

Still hopin' for multiplayer soon, Fingers crossed!

Maybe some minor reworks and refreshes, but nothing major. If the previous patterns are right, this one is ripe to be a new vehicle
