Overview of ArkFz's Vivace REEV powertrain

    First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to Arcanox since Arcanox's hybrid powertrain inspired me to develop more hybrid powertrains for BeamNG.

    My desire to create hybrid powertrains stems from my daily interactions with many hybrid vehicles. I am Chinese and currently living in Mainland China. In recent years, an increasing number of Chinese automakers have been launching various plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with different kinds of hybrid powertrains.
    Among these hybrid systems, the series hybrid system, AKA 'range extended system', is quite popular. Many popular models have adopted this form of powertrain, such as the AITO (SERES & Huawei partnership brand) M-Series, the Li Auto (Lixiang 理想) One and L-Series.

    I have driven these models of vehicles since I first experienced Li Auto One in 2020, and I am impressed by these vehicles. Due to their complete reliance on electric motor drive, these cars exhibit very direct power response, resulting in rapid acceleration, smooth driving experience and excellent NVH performance. More importantly, these vehicles also perform well in terms of fuel efficiency.

    As a result, I'd like to recreate the series hybrid system in BeamNG, and finally Vivace REEV is made! Now, I'd like to introduce how this powertrain works.

    How this hybrid powertrain works.
    The following is a brief diagram of the entire system:

    • The combustion engine is not mechanically connected to the wheels. It only drives the M/G motor to generate electricity.
    • M/G is an electric motor directly connected to the combustion engine. This motor is driven by the engine to generate electricity. When starting the combustion engine, the M/G motor reversely drives the engine to start it.
    • The other motors are mechanically connected to the wheels to drive the vehicle.
    The system have following states:
    • EV State. When the battery's state of charge, AKA 'SOC', is high enough, the combustion engine will not work. The drive motors draw electrical energy from the battery to drive the vehicle.

    • RE-low State. When the SOC is low, the combustion engine will start working, drive the M/G motor to generate electrical energy. When power demand is low, such as during a moderate-speed driving, the inverter distributes electrical energy as needed to the drive motor, with any excess energy being stored in the battery.

    • RE-high State. When power demand is high, such as during overtaking or climbing slopes, the inverter also draws electrical energy from the battery. RE5.png
    • Regen State. When braking, the kinetic energy is recovered through the drive motors and stored in the battery.

    • Engine-Starting State. When the combustion engine is needed, the M/G motor reversely drives the engine to reach the appropriate speed to ignite, making the fuel efficiency higher.

    The whole system is controlled by several lua scripts. Later I will make it clearer so that everyone can use it to create their own range extended vehicle.

    Why this hybrid powertrain eco-friendly?
    • EV mode 0 emission. With a high capacity battery, you are able to only charge the vehicle and drive it as a EV.
    • Engine runs within its high-efficient range. Since the combustion engine only runs to generate electrical energy, it will almost always operate within its high-efficient range, which means more energy from the fuel is converted to electrical energy which will be used to drive the vehicle. The energy efficiency of electric motors can exceed 90%. As a result, the fuel efficiency is higher than traditional vehicles.
    • Regen. Kinect energy can be recycled.

    The only critique I have is on the I-dm configurations that they all start with battery stage of charge = 50%. Maybe this is to better show off hybrid mode? Anyways, I changed all values in the tank/battery files on my system so all cars start with 100% battery power. Apart from that it works flawlessly as far as I can judge.

    Only the AWD REEV vehicle still locks up under braking.

    BYD's i-dm doesn't seem to be in harmony with ABS system. Also, it's not in harmony with ESP.

    We have found this bug and we are trying to fix it. The development is almost done now. Updates will be released next week.

    I like your mod philosophically great, so I actively support development.
    But I want to know how this mod works, that's why I'd like to add a schematic or description.
    (And if you write it down in the mod introduction column, your mod will be introduced more nicely.)

    Looking forward to your guide! I'm developing a EV mod loosely based on a real-life Chinese joint-venture car (hint: 东风纳米box), and I'd like to add a series-hybrid powertrain as an option. Nothing too fancy though, imagine a laotoule-style Taobao range extender but in BeamNG:p Although it sounds basic, its identical to your system diagram (engine-M/G + battery-inverter-motor). I'd imagine the code parts would be similar to the REEV drivetrain.

    Some small bugs一些小问题:
    FWD cars can't adjust regen/blended brakes
    前驱版没法调节CRBS
    i-DM the transition between series and parallel is a bit harsh, speed fluctuates at near 65 km/h
    DM版串并联混动切换时在65km/h顿挫较大
    No e-diff logic
    差速器没电子限滑
    AWD version front and rear inverted torque at mid throttle input
    中等油门下全轮驱动版前电机和后电机扭矩相反,浪费能量

    • i-DM前驱车型的CRBS选项下一个版本就会加入。FWD regen/blended brakes will be adjustalbe in the next version.
    • 串并联切换将更不频繁。 Transition between series and parallel will be improved in the next verrsion.
    • 油门和动能回收的计算方式已经重新设计了,不需要踩特别深了,下个版本就会推出。
    • 电子限滑在考虑加入,后续可能会有机械差速锁+电子能量中锁的车型,还在规划。
    • 并联模式下,当发动机最高效运行时产生的动力大于车辆需要的动力时,P3+P4的动能回收启动,回收多余的能量,在扭矩图上显示可能像是相反的。

    hello! am having issues with the REEV AWD system. The front diff shows that it's accelerating forwards while the rear diff is engaged in reverse. This only occurs when the car is put into Reverse gear and both differentials cancel each other out resulting in no movement at all.

    Make sure you are using the motors designed for REEV. Other motors may not work with this mod.
