I sometimes think I'm jaded in my fears of my favorite media. This thread reminds me that I'm not actually that bad. I personally don't like Epic's Store, but that's because of a bias against their hit application and my lack of interest in many games, and thus not needing any other game stores other than Steam for the couple of games I play a year. I wish I could remember my initial reaction to seeing this thread, but I doubt it was much more than a "Huh. Weird, but alright I guess." I don't know how people come to the conclusion that selling your product elsewhere must mean that the store suddenly spawns into your board meetings. That was probably a passing thought in my head, but I realized that it's not a very mindful thought. I've probably gone down this logic slightly as I initially posted my massive monster truck pack for Rigs Of Rods on two """"competing"""" sites on release, Sim-Monsters and Beam-Monsters. Besides some people not knowing the difference between the two games, It's really cool the people some people gave ROR Monster Trucks a try because of my mod being so easily visible and announced on the BeamNG-Based site. I don't think anyone was every under the assumption that I'd lose motivation or be asked to do something specific because I posted my mod on a second website. Very loose metaphoric example that I always give in my posts aside, point is, Beam being on a 3rd site just gives it more reach, which I don't see anything wrong with. There are people that don't like Steam because of either it's own practices or for this example, because Steam is a DRM and Humble Bundle doesn't have that. Steam probably had some minor backlash when they announced that back in 2014. Hell, I perused the forums a little on the thought I had above, and I only today found that BeamNG was sold on FastSpring before even Humble Bundle and Steam, let alone for $15.00. I've never even heard of FastSpring before. Here's a screenshot of the original page I found on an old wiki page. Spoiler: BeamNG's Original FastSpring Page I really like learning about old game media lore, so I am really curious if there was backlash against the game going to Humble Bundle and Steam, especially if it being double the price was a sticking point for some.
I need to tell everyone... There is a difference between buying a company and selling a companys work. say a game releases on epic. for example, SnowRunner, the offroad truck game was first released in epic games a few months after it was purchased by the embracer group (correct me if I'm wrong) though it was bought, it was not bought by epic or some other epic games company. To make a long story longer if Walmart sells a game (for example Madden NFL 25) they do not own the game copyright itself, they just sell the game after they buy it from the supplier, Walmart does not buy/own the game copyright or the company they just sell the game at the store, the creators of the game still get money.
It's not that they're not smart, I think it's more to do with stereotypes and assumptions. I've noticed that one of the main reasons a lot of things (groups, franchises, companies, products, etc.) get lots of flack is mostly due to their stained reputation (which, granted, is gained through their past actions), and that people instantly assume that the current situation is going to turn out exactly the same way as it did before. People just need to learn to take a step back and review the situation a bit more carefully. A person is smart, but people aren't dumb. That Men in Black quote was wrong. ... They're impulsive.
That situation might have a little to do with "impulsivity", but it has everything to do with thinking ability and intelligence. People cannot seem to understand that Beam.NG is the developer and Epic games is the distributor that only sells the game, and does not own any part of it, and cannot just screw beam.ng over with the flick of a switch.
isn't beamng supposed to be the same on all platforms? the ccf had an update a while back because there was a lua error for epic games players: https://www.beamng.com/resources/2020-hirochi-ccf.29318/update?update=57422
Game itself is exactly the same but it's up to the modders to make sure their mods work on both platforms, 99% of the time they are fine but this mod was using some functions that refer to Steam specifically which didn't work on Epic
