I believe it will only be done the top part of the van, because basically the van is the chassis of a Beetle but with another cabin, the engine and the chassis are the same (only the steering box, etc.) are extremely different from the beetle). However, there is all the bureaucracy involved in making the van work like a Beetle (I'm talking about the 3D part) (Sorry my english )
Yep your correct, the wheel base on the bug and kombis are the same the only difference is the floor pans and the front suspension chassis-wise. Just the body and all of the fiddling around to get parts compatible, Could be done and would like to see a kombi in the game as well, but mrX has his hands tied with personal life and the lore friendly version of the bug. Maybe we could see it maybe not?
Update soon™? Having the VW Bus (Bulli) in BeamNG would be really nice. But I'm not sure if that's ever gonna happen. Its a huge undertaking, especially considering how many variants there are. It's famous for all the special variants. It would be a shame not have at least some of them. I hope BeamNG will add some more german car brands. Having only ETK, is a bit lacking.
But we can start with something simple, like just one or two versions of the Kombi (I know it's not easy to do all of this as it takes a lot of time to do the 3D from scratch)
I'm working towards something like that, but It takes time. There is a lot more to that then adding some parts/3D objects.

Would you mind If I made edits to lean the mod some to lock out features for fair racing environment (I.E. SCORE Class 11 Rulebook) I will not distribute the mod beyond the server and my wish is to not disrespect the amazing work that has been done.
