Is it just me or do the devs always have better graphics than other users? I feel like they have secret knowledge of the game’s graphics settings.
accidentally added the wrong quote, oops!

With the new road, building, and biome authoring tools they added in recent updates, I suspect they're working on the biggest map yet. Those tools are definitely intended to make map making more efficient so bigger maps are more feasible.

There is a 1:1 flat version of earth as a map, I doubt there is anything bigger than that.

I don't think they will make much bigger maps. Unless they introduce new optimization methods (like terrain tiles, and some other). Beyond 4k maps the game can start to struggle, especially with more detailed maps. Unless the map has a lot of empty fields, but that might make it boring.
I also think the tools they are introducing are more for the modders than for the devs, as from what I've saw, they already have a pretty good workflow, mostly with blender (for roads, foliage placing?). (also the tools are pretty easy to break. If they used them, I think they would be way less buggy) (and the proc gen building tool requires editing in blender to be optimized)

Honestly, Italy is already plenty big. I still discover something that I didn't know about every time I drive in it.

Indeed, I always see something something new, even after having counted most of the houses on the map. It has a non-southern quantity of roads, so it is very easy to stumble upon something new. The map leaves a lot of questions open too; why is Norte it's own province, why is there a Raccordo motorway even though there isn't even a single numbered road on the entire island, why are there no abandoned houses and where is that huge and overly detailed landmass in the background supposed to be?
We need a speculation thread without the 'Update' part.

Small Island has a ton of potential for being a career friendly (and maybe a bit bigger) of a map, runs pretty well on mid tier PC / laptops, and most places are easily within range of access and discoverable, plus since it's not a big map you get to drive and get to places / access them very easily
just add some offroad tracks & dirt roads, a bit wider variety of roads (something like the 2 lane styled utah roads), and a bit more ambient life / detail, BOOM, career friendly map.

    Say that again, but slowly...
In all seriousness I think it works well as a small, purpose-built map. The isolated, underdeveloped vibe is part of its charm.

Can't make small island bigger because then it isn't Small Island... But they could make another island, coastline and a way to get to each place and call it something like 'California Coast, USA'

I don't think that's what the devs intend for Small Island to be - in terms of its road layout, it's changed remarkably little in the 12 years since its release. All of its major expansions in its remaster (like the port and the rock tunnel) were on the outskirts. And with the addition of the bird observatory in the remaster, I get the distinct impression that Small Island's meant to be more of a nature reserve that you can do rallies in. The narrow, bumpy loop road is also so tied to Small Island's character (IMO) that changing it would make no sense. I chose it for my base-model time trial runs because it tests vehicles' capabilities of handling rough paved roads so well.

Another thing which makes me believe that Small Island won't be changed much (if at all) in the future is that pretty much all of its roads are used for time trials. While those don't permanently lock roads in place (the JRI peninsula was drastically altered in the map's remaster, and that had its own stage for many years), the devs don't tend to alter "time trial roads" too much if they can help it. Industrial Site's rallycross course has stayed mostly the same for the past 12 years, and many of JRI's roads have also remained mostly the same after its remaster.

Honestly, I think that Small Island already would work great in career mode. The racing branch would be more rally-focused (with perhaps a couple races), deliveries could be done to and from the port, there could be chases and evasions around the island, and there's still some space for various mini-games.

And as Dalek said, Small Island being small and underdeveloped was always part of its vibe. That contrasts very nicely with WCA, which is quickly becoming very developed. I reckon the devs remastered Spearleaf Island into its current form partially as a way to avoid having to industrialize Small Island (and because Spearleaf gave more space for career missions).

An alternative to giving Small Island more stuff could be bringing back Dry Rock Island in a remastered form, which would be quite nice. That had some houses and industry, but it also had a lot of winding two-lane roads (like you suggested) and some dirt roads. I believe it also had a dirt track of sorts. (EDIT: It not only had a dirt track, but some derby arenas in the middle of the map.) However, I don't think that has any more chance of happening, since JRI was made to replace DRI.

A little bit more of detail would be appreciated for the map, and as you said,I’m not looking to make small island something like WCUSA at all, I just believe maybe a bit more explorable stuff in any form (EG other small islands, some more dirt roads / normal roads, etc) would be much appreciated BY ME personally since I really enjoy the map and play on it quite often. it could even get / create its own branch of career gameplay! Something like wild discoveries & expeditions would really sit well in the environment of the map

It makes me wonder if any of the new/remastered vehicles will get fuel doors and hood release latches on them. Considering the Sunburst has both and the only other vehicle with a hood latch is the Lansdale, it’s possible

Also another prediction I have is that all vehicles will finally get proper PBR headlights with incandescent simulation.

Okay, that's understandable - I thought you were wanting Small Island to become more like Spearleaf Island. My apologies if I came off a bit rude in my OP.

But yeah, I definitely would love to see Small Island become the "nature" map. It seems very well-suited to that.

I could see new vehicles getting fuel doors and hood release latches in the future, for sure, but I'm not sure if older vehicles will be updated to get them. It's certainly possible (see: opening doors (first introduced with the Scintilla/Covet in 0.25/0.26, added to all vehicles except the T-Series in 0.28)).

As for incandescent headlights - I don't think any of the post-2005 vehicles would have those, but I could definitely see lighting upgrades being added to more cars in 0.36.

I would much prefer that too, we need a Australia map and a Japan map.
